All ended in a cloud of smoke :(

Featured Replies

Hi

Was driving my 07 vrs today down some quiet country lanes doing 30mph with a nice warm car (in terms of engine). Started to go up a hill so applied a bit of gas, and i mean a bit, i was by no means ragging it. Car started to pull as normal then BANG !, felt like i'd been hit up the arse by a lorry. The car was chucking out plumes of black smoke, in fact at one point i thought it was on fire, seconds later it lost all power. I tried pulling it to the side of the road but it would hardly budge, and when you did get it moving it was shuddering in every gear. Is the general feeling the turbos buggered? The cars been well looked after (well the 6k i've done on it, cant count for the 16 odd before). Its never booted from cold and allowed to warm down. Anyway ended up getting towed to my local dealer.

More likely to be a popped boost hose. Get similar symptoms. :) Much easier fix.

Don't worry! Mine did this - twice.

The first time the AA put the pipe back together only for it to fail again the next day. My Skoda garage was particularly unhelpful so I reconnected it and added a hose-clip - that was 40,000 miles ago. That was the connection at the bottom "in" the bumper

The second time it popped on the top of the engine, shortly after the cambelt replacement. I suspect the Skoda garage - a different one - didn't clip it back together properly. I did and it's been fine since (approx 15,000 miles).

Cheers guys !!

Yeah dont panic, very much doubt its the turbo at that mileage. Mine popped a boost pipe twice too

matt

Yeah id go with the boost pipe too. If your turbo went you would be gettin white smoke not black.

Yeah, black smoke means it is overfuelling and not getting enough air in - This is because boost drops to nil when you pop a boost hose therefore no boosted air getting into the engine = less air to burn fuel = black smoke.

Worth doing the cable tie mod to prevent the hose blowing off again. I wish they had stuck with the old clamp type hoses, at least you could then fit decent marine grade clamps. The lug and clip arrangement is pretty pants.

Someone mentioned theirs popped off after a cambelt change. You only need to have the pipe off once or twice for the lugs to wear down - very soft indeed. And if some heavy handed git with a big screwdriver has prised them apart, you're asking for trouble. What's laughable is that Skoda charge £20+ for a replacement L-shaped pipe at the back of the headlight.

As above, worth doing the cable tie mod...

I used proper metal hoseclips - needed two to get the diameter required.

I use hose clamps round the pipes, and then cable ties between the clips. No way are they coming off.
