To Passat Or Not To Passat

Featured Replies

That is the question, I'm about to take the plunge on a 2007 Passat 2.0 DSG.

Any advice welcome, including a Rotopinion on what to look out for, or if I should even bother and just keep Madame Superb a bit longer, ok she's had a few teeth out and got a couple of wrinkles, but she still cooks a good dinner and never says no in the bedroom, so I'm a bit ripped on this, I know the Superb is essentially a better car even if it isn't, the Passat has no little touches in the cabin, nor does it have the room either, but I have to keep my tools modern and it's the best price option I can find right now, Sup 2 is extortionate S/H, one dealer has one up for more than I can order a new one for, it's nearly 2 years old now so you'd think an SE would be available for 13-14k by now, no such luck, that'll be 18.5k thank you Sir is all you'll hear.

I'd want a DSG...

Thx mate, but I need a DSG one, the cheapest one in silver is £16500 in an S spec, something I also want to avoid as I'll never be happy with it.

I borrowed a Passat recently when mine was off the road. It was the CR170 with 11k miles on it. Loved every minute of it. No rattles, no squeaks, nice alcantara interior and a diesel that you can hardly hear. The fit and finish is as good as the Superb and it felt a little smaller. There's nothing wrong with the Superb either though. I'd be scratching my head if I had the choice of either.

Thx again Chris, but it's way too much, I recently agreed a deal on a £22k Toyota Avensis, 4 mths old 3k miles for £15k, the only thing holding me back is the issues currently bounding around, and if I really want a large debt round my neck at this time, which tbh I don't think I do, the Passat I can get for 9-13k depending if I want a 56 plate or 08, either way the Passat is proven to retain value better, sadly with a Superb it's worth the earth when it's at a dealer and not a lot when you want to sell it as one user here found out recently, paid £21k and was offered 14k px about 9 mths later, I might just wait on a bit tbh, the Superb has been a good car and I'm rather fond of it, it's more like an old friend than a car, something I can depend on that's low maintenance and eats up the tasks, the main thing I'm looking at is if there are any horror stories about the 2.0 lump or the DSG tbh.

superb

I've just changed from a Superb I to a Superb II - 2.0 TDi 170 DSG, and so far I love it, so easy to drive, and really has the punch!

So I would rate the DSG over a manual - so much in fact I actually look forward to driving to work!

Well that's swung it, 3 times over the last 4 days I've tried to get a call back from a VW dealer who approached me in the first place about a car, it would seem I can expect the same lousy treatment I got from Skoda when I had to let them loose on the car with their blunt knife and broken spanners, so I'm unless a private deal on a Passt goes through going to be an Avensis owner before long, tbh I want the Avensis more anyway, the only reason I've not got one yet is down to price, but I've decided that I'd like a new car that isn't in it's twlight years as the Passat is right now, with a new one due in 2011, so unles price factor comes into it on a Passat I'm going to wave VAG goodbye, and I'm not that happy with the reading of forums relating to VW reliability either, couple that with the you need us more than we need you attitude and I think the Toyota will be a better buy, anyway you can get one less than a year old for 15k, much better than the 18-21k VW want for a Passat, hang the depreciation, the Avensis isn't bad anyway and it starts off 5k in front anyway.

I just can't get over this whole VAG thing, I think they have an awakening around the corner myself, wait on a year and watch the neighbour who has one now roll up in an Accord,Avensis or Mondeo next time, there's so many disgruntled ppl driving a VW these days it's gonna take a whole new way of thinking to turn them around, the car I'm looking at had a new mech unit last year and the guy only bought it a year ago, as it's a 57 and he's owner number 3 I'm seriously thinking of wide berthing it altogether, it sounds like a case of I've had enough of it at his end, he must've given at least 15k for it, so he's gonna take a hard hit selling it, and for what he's asking for it I'd say the PX figure must be around 8k, not bad, 7k dep for 11 mths use, then it will hit the VW magic wand forecourt and be worth 14k again.

Now, where's my learn Japanese book?

BTW, this grumble does not reflect the Superb, I can't fault it since Skodaman had no more interest in it.
