Petrol or diesel?

Featured Replies

I am thinking of buying a new Octavia Estate. (not VRS)Cant make up my mind about petrol or diesel. Petrol costs more to run but diesel is £1500 more to buy. Petrol has more bhp but diesel has more torque. I do about 9000 miles a year. Any advice?

9K a year, petrol is probably best, would take at least 2-3 yrs to recoup the extra you would pay on a diesel in fuel savings.

Almost certainly the petrol...

It would take sometime for you to recoup the diesel costs, and I'm assuming (here we go, watch me be completely wrong) that you do mostly short city journeys which means the DPF in the diesel runs the risk of getting clogged up...

Petrol.

Drive both and see which you prefer. I'm in a similar situation to you and I bought a diesel because I hate paying tax on fuel so wanted to keep my running costs to a minimum. You'll certainly get far better economy out of a diesel.

The 1.9TDI doesn't have DPF

EDIT: I'd only not get a diesel if you're doing lots of very short journeys as the engine will never heat up and the economy will be no better than a petrol, but in my circumstance I'm doing 25 mile round trips although I still only do ~10K per year. When SWMBO drives 2 miles to the local village the economy is awful.

True, but I thought that had now been replaced by the 1.6 which does... Or has that not happened yet?
