06 VRS Possible wheel bearing wear

Featured Replies

Noticed a gradually worsening rumbling noise from the front of my 65k miles 06 Fabia VRS - only when the car is in motion. I suspect that a wheel bearing is on its way out.

Anyone have any idea of the cost of a replacement part/ cost to fit it etc?...............................................and is it a fairly straightforward DIY job or would it be best to get the dealer to replace it?

Cheers

Bearing and hub replaced as an assembly, about £180 fitted.

Ouch! - thanks MoggyTech.

Is it a straightforward job - or is it in amateur DIY territory?

Cheers

DIY is possible, but you may need to buy quite expensive large socket to undo the hub nut, you would also need a three leg hub puller of decent quality, as the hubs can be very tight. Shouldn't take a garage more than 1/2 hour to swap out the hub.

Socket is a 36mm bi hexagon - ebay for around £11 posted

Biggest problem is pressing in the new hub/bearing without killing the new bearings ( the dealers use a special tool to spread the load on the bearing outer race )

And bear in mind that the ABS sensor ring is built in to the hub/bearing assembly.

Oh I feel your concern.

I've had what I think is a rumbling bearing for over 12 months now.

I had my Skoda techy friend come out with me to try and determine which one is noisy, but even he wasn't sure.

It sounds as though it's f/n/s, but not 100% sure.

A large amount of dosh to be spent on a guess, unless I replace both sides, knocking on for £400.

The strange thing about it all though, is that the noise / humming/ droning hasn't got any worse in over 15,000 miles, but it is really annoying.

Fitting new tyres didn't make any difference, so I know it's not that.

Thanks guys - think I'll live with it for a bit longer unless it becomes an issue at MOT time. Mr Ree, I would say mine is n/s/f too although as you say its difficult to be sure.

Cheers

Does it get slightly worse when you turn left or right? If so that would suggest what wheel it is...

My front n/s was replaced 18 months ago for £170 at a VAG indy.

Take it to someone who has done the job before and is familiar with the hub assembly and ABS sensor.

£532 if they cant get the old bearing out of the bearing carrier! (I put more detailed explanation post in a few weeks ago)

my 06 fabia vrs has developed this noise aswell. also sounds like nearside front. checked for play and everything is tight, no movement wot so ever. im trying the new tires aswell hoping for the best.

Worth checking the wheel for play. If all seems well give the tyres a check over - inspect for uneven wear etc. Tracking/geometry that's out could cause some similar symptoms. Sometimes it can be really tricky identifying where something's like this is coming from as sounds can easily be amplified/transferred when the car's in motion - so get each corner checked over :)

I recommend phoning round. I've just been quoted and accepted a price of circa £145 from a Skoda dealer after getting a quote from a local Kwik-Fit that the dealer did their best to match.

A mate of mine did mine for me and it took four to push the abs pickup ring into place evenly so it clicked in. Just make sure you get a genuine part. Mine was from a motor factors and it was far from perfect. If I recall it's about £60 for bearing which is in the hub from the dealer.

replaced the tires on my car yesterday. all it did was make the bearing noise louder as the road noise from tires has now gone. so looking at bearing so does anyone know the part number for the front bearing and does anyone know weather the bearing and the hub comes as one part

Not sure of the part number but the Bearing/wheel flange/ABS sensor ring come as one part - they are about £55 from eurocarparts - not sure about dealer pricing.

right im pretty sure that its one of the front bearings. i also noticed that on way home tonight my clutch and brake pedals vibrate while im driving along the faster i get the more they vibrate can anyone tell me if this is a side affect of a wheel bearing on its way out?

thanks for any help

Unusual but not impossible. I would jack the car up before you drive it again and check for wheel rock. I t could be the hub is about to part company with the car. :o

I've done all that malarky with mine, and it's still inconclusive tbh.

Had the wheels jacked up and no play or noise.

I'm now wondering if it's one of the back bearings.

The sound seems to move from one end of the car to the other, or is it just being amplified and playing tricks with my ears?

P'raps it's just me and I need to go and see an ear specialist.

I'll be hearing voices next. :o

This is exactly what I am sure I can hear too (Ibiza TDi 130). The sound seems to change ends of the car depending on speed.

The rears are by far the easiest to change (but no cheaper to buy) so i'm going to change those first. hopefully that will cure the rumble.

Just need this weather to dry up a touch cos i'll be working outside on the drive.

checked play on all 4 wheels today and they are all solid. tracked the vibrating down to some dodgey wheel balancing by me :( all sorted out now still unsure on the bearing at this time going to wait for the noise to get worse and then change it.

You did your own wheel balancing?!

THAT I'd have loved to have watched. :D

Old biscuit tin and wire coat hanger to check the gravitational pull whilst spinning the wheel on a sewing machine, and Lego bricks stuck on with tank tape was it?

If you think a wheel bearing has gone, take the motor out for a drive. Then put your hand through the wheel and feel Hub, Not the disc but the solid none moving part, also might be possible to feel through the centre of the wheel if drove far enough to generate enough heat. Cannot give advice on fitting as never done it, that is what Garages are for.
