Fabia VRS Whining Noise From Rear Wheels

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new on here, so please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong place!

I have a 54 reg Fabia VRS which, since the bad weather started over Christmas, (when my car was not used for a couple of weeks), has developed a whining noise that seems to be coming from the back wheels. It only seems to happen when the weather has been wet, and when I drive off after leaving the car parked overnight. It sounds like the noise you get when you run your finger round the top of a glass and the noise "speeds up" as the car does, but it doesn't change in pitch, just speed. After driving about 200m the noise stops and does not come back again until the car has been left overnight.

I have tried leaving the handbrake off overnight, but that makes no difference. I had the garage look at my brakes, but they said that there was nothing wrong there (- but I don't trust them).

Has anybody had a similar experience or can suggest what might be the problem?

Thanks

Just sounds like a build up of surface rust on the rear disc, nothing to worry about.

Oh, and welcome :)

The back brakes on the vRS can be a little sticky. try driving a little (10/20 meters maybe?) with the hand brake on, not yanked on but making a good contact.

A few people have suffered from the brakes not releasing fully after handbrake use. A spring is available to help with the release of the cable, try searching for handbrake spring / sticky handbrake in the search menu. I think there's 3 or 4 different springs of various VAG common vehicles and some work better than others. That said, not sure if these would help if you've left the handbrake off and still had the noise.

I fitted some Audi springs to the rear callipers. They tighten up the handbrake and prevent the callipers from sticking. The springs were about £2 from the local Audi dealer but had to be ordered in

Do a search and save a kitten

Thanks to both of you who replied so quickly. I had my brakes changed at the start of December, but I'm sorry to admit that without looking at the paperwork, I don't know exaxtly what the garage did. The noise didn't start until after Christmas, so I think you might be on to something with the sticky new brakes thing.

I'll have a go at driving with the handbrake slightly on for a short distance and see if that does the trick.

Thanks again.
