runaway revs

Featured Replies

Occaisionaly on my Roomster usually when cold or just after starting up when I take my foot of the throttle to change gear or brake the engine revs keep going at full belt, and the car just accelerates. It does not happen often and can be controlled by pressing clutch pedal and changing gear. Has anyone else had a similar problem.

I haven't... and I assume the Roomie is like the old Fabia and uses an "electronic throttle", ie when you press the accelerator pedal it sends an electronic signal to the engine rather than a cable... so it sounds like that's faulty...

I'd get yourself down to your dealer asap, and get it checked out.

I had exactly this! Only later did I understand the likely cause. Sequence of events was:

1. Burst tyre by hitting kerb -doh! - replaced with spare.

2. Two new tyres fitted by Kwik Fit.

3. Noticed "over-revving with clutch depressed" issue.

4. Booked into dealer: they accepted there was an issue on a test drive, but all diagnostic tests drew a blank. They wondered if it could be a sensor issue. Booked in for replacement of accelerator electronics, as a possible cure, They pointed out that Kwik Fit had fitted the wrong size tyres!

5. Tyres replaced - over-revving problem solved immediately!

THEREFORE(!) I conclude that the cause was either:

A. Wrong-sized tyres giving signals through sensors that confuse the engine control systems, OR

B. Hitting the kerb moved a sensor near the wheel that was hit, causing the issue, which was solved by Kwij Fit fitters relocating (accidentally or intentionally) the mal-adjusted sensor.

Is there anything in the history of your car which might be relevant?

If not, I'd suspect the accelerator sender unit, or else a wheel sensor.

Had a similar problem with my Roomie - mention throttle position sensor to your dealer and it should get done under warranty.

I have the same problem with my Roomster, reported it to the dealer and booked it in. However, the dealer says that error codes are not being registered and Skoda UK won't change the part under warranty unless error codes are reported. Their suggestion was to take the Roomster to them if the problem occurred without switching off the ignition to see if an error code is registered However, as the problem does not happen that frequently and tends to happen on longer journeys when I am not near the dealer, I have not been able to do this.

I have taken some video with my digital camera when the problem has occurred but have not presented it yet to Skoda to see if this is suitable evidence in absence of an error code; the warranty will be expiring soon so I will need to try to get this sorted soon.

A part does not need to generate error codes when its faulty, if its still gnerating signals within tollerances, even if they are wrong then no fault code will be logged. I'd try a different dealer who is more willing to go on a bit more evidence than a fault code reader. As far as this fault is concerned the car thinks you still have the foot on the throttle, until the throttle pedal generates a fault outside its normal operating range then no fault will be logged.

You could write to them saying that you have highlighted a fault and they have refused to try to cure the fault and therefore you hold them personally responsible for any accident that may occur which could be attributed to that fault in the future?

The threat of sueing them could nudge them a bit?

Same problem on my 08 Roomster 1.9TDI. It sounds like a sensor problem, more than a mechanical/"sticky accelerator" one. The water light is always switched on blue for the first 10 min. Wonder if some sort of temperature sensor is involved.

I am booked this week to fix a completely different problem ...the car is only 10 days old....

I think from older posts there is an acknowledged problem with the trottle sensor on some of the roomster/ Fabia II models mainly the diesel and 1.6 petrol I think but not sure. As for the blue light being on for 10 minutes I think that is normal diesel engines especially PD ones do take a long time to warm up and then a long time to cool as they are thermally efficient. My olf 1.4 TDi used to take a good 5 to 10 miles before the coolant had warmed up, where as the petrol engine only takes about a mile.

Yep - blue light for the first 5 to 10 minutes is perfectly normal.

Problems with the throttle position sensor are well documented. Try a search in Roomy and Fabia threads.

Thanks for feedback!

...at the same time, both 12V power sockets are not working at all.

3 problems already spotted after driving an "approved used" car for a couple of days. Aren't these skodas supposed to have "comprehensive workshop check"? ...really tempted to return the car (if possible)

That isn't very good service, generally with those approved schemes you have so many days to swap the vehicle. I would make a list of all the issues tell them you want them sorting or that you want to swap for a different car. As for the 12v sockets I would suspect a fuse if you look underneath the steering column there is a pull off cover where the fuses are I would check they are all in properly first as they can come loose. If it still doesn't work check if the fuse has blown just remember that the diagram of where the fuses are is confusingly back to front so double check you have the right one.

Just so we all know, what are we classing as a wrong size tyre. If you went to have them replaced, surely the likes of kwik fit would replace with exactly the same size?

I have now had a result! The problem was getting worse and my idle rev speed was varying from the usual to about 1500rpm. I drove it to the dealer and thankfully as I pulled in, the revs were high on idle so I left the engine running and got someone from service to have a look at it; I was able to demonstrate the issue, and although I don't think any faults were reported on the computer, they were able to 'replicate' the probem and Skoda have now approved the replacement of the throttle potentiometer (I can't remember exactly what it is called); this has now been booked in.

Thanks for your help in this matter

Good stuff! Shame they wouldn't take your word for it in the first place, though!

I'd ordered it on-line; far cheaper than just turning up at the depot. The warehouse had sent them specifically for me, and the fitters had fitted them, not unreasonably, Once I pointed it out, they were duly apologetic. ISTR that the profile %age was different, but it was now 3 months ago.
