Aux belt play?

Featured Replies

What deflection should there be on the Auxiliary Belt on a 1.9Tdi - my mate's just had his changed by a garage but it's making a "shwooshing" noise and i feel there's a bit too much play in it (can almost twist the belt 90 degrees using finger-power...). Cheers, Peeps...

The 1.9TDi engine has a tensioning pulley that should take care of the V-belt tension - you can't adjust the tension manually

it sounds like the tensioner has failed, not unheard of, usually at mileages though

The tensioner should apply the correct tension to the belt . Prior to tensioners being fitted to most cars , a good rule of thumb used to be that the belt tension is correct if you just about turn the belt 90 deg. at mid span along it's longest run using 1 finger & thumb.. So it's appears the belt tension is spot-on . Noise needs investigating

Cheers for the replies, foks. The tensioner certainly didn't look like a new item so i suspect that hasn't been changed - i thought they were part of the kit... not always it seems!

Tensioner is not part of the usual kit as it's about £70. Worth replacing though, when they fail it can damage the alternator pulley and or aircon pulley.
