VAG CR diesel engines - economy...

Featured Replies

I had a VW Passat R-Line estate - 2.0 TDi (110 bhp) rental car last week for a 250 mile journey. I believe it was the latest CR engine. I was amazed at the fuel economy - 57 mpg overall whilst traveling at the 'prevailing' speeds on the motorway.

Am I right in believing that this 110bhp CR engine is a detuned version of the vRS 170 bhp TDi CR engine? VW also do a 140 bhp CR. Am I going

to get anywhere near that MPG in my vRS?

vw dont do a 2.0tdi with 110bhp. they do 140 or 170bhp. The only other is a 1.6 tdi cr which is 103BHP. It may have been an older 2.0tdi but this would have been a pd.

Ah sorry spotted it now - wasn't grouped together with the diesels on the website!

It will be the same engine i'd imagine but with different turbo, injectors, intercoolers etc. Quite why they have done this when the 1.6 is 103bhp I don't know particularly as it has less torque!

A colleague has the 2.0 110 engine, and its pretty damn good on fuel. I think its quite a bit more economical than the 140 and 170 engines tbh.

Got 58mpg actual from Coventry to Sheffield on Friday. That's with double the peak BHP (but no DPF) :smirk:

You're a PD though Nick - and that's not meant to be rude

so far over 1500 miles the trip says I've averaged 45.9mpg and that is a mix of some motor and around town some of which has been in very heavy traffic. On a motorway run its averaged about 50ish so far, but I expect that to improve with mileage and as I get used to the car.

And yours is a DSG, which I assume is marginally less efficient than a manual box. Still good though. It's just that I was mightily impressed with that Passat's economy, it wasn't until I got home and looked it up on the VW website, that I realised it 'only' had 110bhp.

aye sorry should have stated its the DSG so the manual I would have thought would be better.

A run up to Newcastle at the weekend, five up and lots in the boot. Mixture of motorway and A roads - 49 mpg on the way up, 51 mpg on the way back (as indicated on the trip computer which is a couple of mpg optimistic).

This is with only 3,500 miles on the clock, so I would still expect some further improvement as the miles go on.

I've a 170 cr and now that it's run in I'm getting 50 to the gallon.

Sounds good to me!

I've got a 170 CR vRS, done 1200 miles from new so far, averaged 45mpg over last 800 miles of very mixed driving, including a lot of around town on cold engine. Best managed so far has been 52mpg on 200 miles of mainly motorway driving, through rush hour so including a few slow bits (all mpg from the maxidot, so may be slightly optimistic)

I'm pretty pleased with that, and even if you're not hanging around it will still average about 40mpg

VRS CR TDI manual

My last fill was at 4413km and at that point I had averaged 41.54 mpg over the life of the car.
