Passat TDi 130 Down On Power

Featured Replies

Hi folks.

Guy at work has an 04 Passat PD130.

He's complaining that it's suddenly down on power.

I took it for a run, totally gutless.

No excess smoke, drives smoothly, just no power.. Unplugged the MAF, and the car was just the same.

Past experience of sluggishness has always been MAF related.

But i'm unsure, just looking for a 2nd/3rd/4th opinion on this.

Any pointers ?

Thanks

Johnny.

EGR valve gummed up is my bet.

Would that cause a sudden drop ?

It's just started doing it all of a sudden, not a gradual loss in performance or anything.

Although i know you had a passat..so you know more than me ! :D

Could it be the vaines sticking on the turbo, so no boost?

If the EGR is siezed anywhere but fully open then it will cause power loss, yes.

See if you can move the little lever as I've marked with an arrow, and see if it moves.

I'd whip the EGR off and give it a good scrub out, it will be caked regardless.

Thanks Tom.

We'll pop out and give that a try in a while, and see if the lever moves.

As for cleaning it out, i'll leave that to him ! :D

I'd say MAF. The car should be much slower with it disconnected, and my A3 behaved as you describe and a MAF fixed it.

The way to be sure is to log it with VCDS.

Had he done any work in the engine bay before it happened? could have knocked off the little pipes for the valves these run under the air filter ducting and cause this type of problem not easy to see.

The only thing been done to the car was, that it's been in for it's MOT in the past week. (passed)

Apart from that, nothing. Going to take another look at lunch.

I'll double check the pipes under the filter housing though, thanks for that.

:)

Has the car been serviced recently? if not its worth doing a service, always a good route to cure a problem.

Do the following this is basic maintenance which my local mechanic pointed out to me:

Check oil level if low top up can sometimes cause a loss of power especially on turbos must keep a frequent eye

Oil change (inc Oil filter obviously) - Using correct PD oil

Air filter - Regardless at every service

Fuel filter - I had this changed recently and it seems to be reving happier

Glow plugs - not a service item but could always be an IF worth doing if its high mileage anyway

Clean MAF Lightly just by taking it off and blowing air down it should clean off the dust and etc

Check intake pipes and intercooler pipe and hoses are all connected

Check EGR Valve if its clogged by removing the intercooler pipe if so clean it horrible job or replace

Brakes are not sticking should roll easy on a hill without the brakes applied

If the problem of loss of power is still there then its worth doing a diagnostic, the list above is only checked over at service items but thats what my local has advised me if these things are checked over as a routine there should not realy be any problems.

Hope it gets fixed

Hi I have passat 1.9 diesel 130hp 2005, no power more than 40-50 miles on motorways, I stop the engine and I start again drive normal wend I slow down it lose the power again, what it could be????? (no lights on the board) thank you

"suddenly" suggests a lack of vac to the turbo  that's where I 'd start
