DRL's & Cornering Fogs

Featured Replies

Picked up my new car yesterday and already my first question! I have maxidot and was looking for the option to enable the DRL's, but can't find it. Does this have to be enabled by the dealer so that the option then appears in maxidot? If so - is that the same for cornering fogs? Anyone know how long it takes them to enable that - could it be a while you wait thing?

Also, I noticed that my foglights have two bulbs in them - does that mean that one of them is for the DRL's?

Other than that nice car - the 1.4 seems a bit underpowered at the moment, compared with the one I test drove, but I guess that's just because it needs to loosen up a bit and I've come from driving a diesel so need to adapt my driving style a bit.

Are cornering fogs legal?. What benefit do they give?

They are annoying to other road users, I would choose the leave them switched off!

I think Skoda are losing the plot a bit & potentially a lot of their traditional customer base. Most people prefer Skoda for their functionality & simplicity. Cornering fogs / christmas tree lights & other muppetry should be left to Audi & the like!

They will become legal for all new cars from 2012 so to me it appears that the current Octavia range will be around for at least 2 years. My wifes new Ibiza has cornering fogs for the same reason

As far as I'm aware, dealers aren't yet able to activate cornering fogs so I'd not only take sandwiches & a flask etc, but I'd have your post redirected as well!

Someone with VCDS should be able to do it for you though.

Of course they're legal and, believe it or not, give a better spread of light when cornering.

I can't see why they're annoying as I think they're extremely useful. Probably of more benefit to FL vRS drivers due to the new fog light positioning though.

I'm presuming you're referring to DRL's which will become standard (I thought) in 2011.

Cornering fogs are legal, they have been fitted to Mercs for a number of years and the current superb since it was released in 2008. I was sceptical at first but now find them very useful.

I'm happy to stand corrected on this but I am not aware of any amendment to the Vehicle Lighting Regs. to make use of the front fog lights legal in conditions where visibility is not seriously reduced. Therefore, strictly speaking, if cornering fogs are operative in good conditions they are not legal. I think you'd have to be very unlucky to be given a ticket for it but as far as I'm aware it would be an offense for them/it to be on. As I say though, happy to stand corrected.

Sarge.

Mercedes & SEAT wouldn't enable them from factory if they were illegal

They are useful really make a difference when there's no street lighting

They dont need an ammendment to the Vehicle Lighting Regs, if they did then xenon headlights and LED tail lights would also be illegal. They are legal in the UK because of EU type approval for their use across the whole of europe.

Can I enable cornering fogs on my 2008 pre fl car? I saw a superb the other week in a car park and I thought it was really good. Much safer for the driver and people in car park to see car turnning.

So what about DRL's - how easy is it to enable them?

VCDS should be able to sort it.

As above + you'll have options on which type of DRL's to have activated. If you have maxidot then you should be able to control it after it is enabled (I think!)

Great - thanks.

My Fiat Bravo 150hp Multi-jet had cornering fogs turned on from the get go...

When I pick up my new vRS estate, what is the likely hood the DRL's will be activated?

DRLs WILL be activated but cornering fogs won't be

And I'd assume the dealer wont turn cornering fogs for me?

Mine didn't know how to at the time. They had to be done with VCDS by a Briskodian!

So your conering fogs are now working, who did yours for you?!

Check out the info for the East Midlands Meets Tim - next one is probably before you get the car though - someone usually has VCDS there.

I've just had the DRL facility activated on my 2010 L&K by my supplying dealer at no charge. I now have an additional option in the Maxidot lighting menu to switch them on or off.

The technician gave me a number of choices, use either the dipped headlights or the fog lights as DRLs and include rear lights or not. I opted for front fogs only as I use the auto lights facility for normal driving. Slightly off subject I asked about enabling a second rear fog light but was told this could not be done.
