This is worrying ............ URGENT

Featured Replies

I've just inspected my new vRS CR DSG that was collected yesterday and note that the front red calipers have been 'reworked' - see pictures. Both front calipers have had substantial material removed top and bottom (possibly with a grinder) and no attempt made to protect the bare alloy afterwards. Can anyone that has collected their new vRS recently have a look to see if this is normal because I'm concerned this could be a safety issue. I'll contact Skoda and the dealer when I've had some feedback.

That's not right at all! Best take it back and ask them WTF they've done to it!

Nope,

They are all like at at the moment, when I took off my wheels to clean, & had a good look at the machined surface & you can see where the caliper has been held for machining. The calipers are painted before the bores are machined, it may well be that they have just changed the machining procedure.

The dealer will not have a clue to be honest, neither will SUK

Good Luck

Actually looked at image one and can't see an issue apart from no paint at that point. Are you saying that the metal has beenground also? The caliper itself is solid cast iron so it would take a fair bit of abuse anyway.....

Get on to the dealer first thing tomorrow. I'm fascinated to hear the explanation for that.

Actually, would you have noticed if they had not been painted in the first place.......? :mmm:

Just an observation....

Quite normal I reckon. Mine are exactly the same although the cut section is now black and grimy so not so noticeable. My wife's old Leon was just the same too.

Appreciate the prompt responses and sorry for the poor pics - I was in a bit of a panic to take some for the forum. .

A considerable amount of material has definitely been ground away and they not just holding marks.

I've emailed the dealer with some pics ............

Looks a bit naff but can't see how it would be a safety issue

It looks like someone's just picked up an angle grinder and taken a chip out of the caliper :S Weird!

Shouldn't the ridged body of the caliper continue running with it's ridges until it's flush to the end of the caliper, if you see what I mean?

looks completely normal to me......................

I'd take the car back, looks dodge to me!

random - probably just a changee of tooling/supplier. bit pap tho. wish they were still green!

Just checked mine from 10/09 build and it is the same - but not as clean !

LOL, I too can confirm it's normal. I finally cracked and went outside with a torch. It was just the angle of your photo and the cleanliness of the unpainted metal on the caliper made it look worse than it is.

It's quite normal Engineering practice to paint castings before machining as it is difficult to paint after machining due to masking problems . Also the important pad seating, piston seal areas, etc are machined to the correct dimensions instead of being covered in an indeterminate thickness of paint . I would be more worried if every thing was painted !

It just looked kind of rough in that first photo. Give it a couple more days and it will be black and you'll never notice it again.

No marks on my calipers....

Mine are the same - exactly the same markings on the front calipers. Week 4 build, 2010.

I have a pair of Mk V Golf GTi calipers in the garage and they are exactly the same,

DSCF0618.jpg

Me too, same marks on front calipers. None on rear.

Was in the dealers this afternoon and the FL vRS in the showroom was just the same;
