ESP with ABS, EBV, MSR, ASR,EDS,HBA and DSR

Featured Replies

My new Octavia Estate 4x4 has ESP with ABS, EBV, MSR, ASR,EDS,HBA and DSR. All very nice but what do they all mean?

It means that you really have to go out your way to crash!...

The electronic diff system certainly helps make the car far more capable than you would expect.

ESP = Electronic Stability Program

ABS = Anti-lock Braking System

ASR = Anti Slip Regulation (Traction Control)

HBA = Hydraulic Braking Assist.

MSR = engine torque control. (not sure what it stands for)

EBV = Electronic Brake Force Distribution although it can be EBD.

I've found these at http://www.volkswagen.com/vwcms/master_public/virtualmaster/en2/experience/innovation/technical_glossary.html I'm not sure about EDS and DSR.

ESP = Electronic Stability Program (Means you paid £350 for a £1500 to fix fault to occur at some point in the future if the car is over a certain age)

Corrected that for you ;)

Many thanks to you all for info. I didn't pay for ESP it was included in the 4X4 spec.but note what you say about problems.

Does anyone know if VAG have solved it yet or can new owners expect a failure?

EDS = Electronic Diff Lock

DSR = Dynamic Steering Response (addition to ESP, gives you steering recomendation to stabilize the vehicle)

MSR = Engine Torque Control (part of ASR, controls the power supply when shifting down on slippery surfaces and braking with the engine)

Skoda lexikon (in German, use Google translate if necessary)

It's supposedly been solved (late 2009 from most reports - but it's all finger in the air stuff at best so we don't really know for sure). VAG wont tell when they changed the parts supply to the production lines exactly, or give a way to identify whether a particular car is old or new version of the unit.

I can't help but feel VAGs handling of the whole issue has been very poor, much worse than the Toyota debacle but that grabbed the headlines in a way that only a speeding out of control car can.

Dented VAGs reputation for sure :thumbdown:

I think you mean "continues to dent VAG's reputation" because let's face it one thing is having the problem in the first place, which is unfortunate for all concerned, but quite another is trying to sweep it under the carpet.

Can you tell something more about it? Some details? What is supposed to happen?

Thanks.

ESP is extra-sensory perception. It means that you can drive the car blind and is very common on BMWs, particularly very large 4 x 4s with young women driving them...
