Noticed the front brake calipers today, the pad sliding "channels" are already rusting onto their retainer. This is after only 7/8 weeks of winter use.

Something to keep an eye on for the future.

That does not look nice - why is it happening? Is it associated with poor quality control?

Not unusual for suspension or brake components to show signs of corrosion, particularly with the type of winter we have had this year and the amount of road salt. Manufactures don't tend to lavish a high level of protection on these unseen components, some of which may need replacing within the lifetime of the car due to fare wear & tear depending on how it's used.

Would not be overly concerned by this myself.

I agree. Provided the component is used on a daily basis then the rust will rub off. If you are really concerned, I would suggest the application of a high temperature grease such as SnapOn's NeverSeeze or Copperslip just to the rusting part. As long as the application does not touch the disk (which rusts overnight) then you should be OK.

I think that you would see a simlar level of corrosion on most cars at the moment. One question though; do you use alloy wheel cleaner? The acidic based cleaning agent is responsible for the corrosion on many brake components and wheel nuts. If you do use this then I recommend changing to a non-acid based wheel cleaner such as Autoglym custom wheel cleaner.

Most production cars use steel castings for the calliper frame - and they rust, as do the disks if left for 24 hours. The section shown in the photo is loose fit and would not cause a problem unless it was left for a few months preferably parked near the sea. As I suggested before a tiny smear of a high temperature grease along that track would sort it.
