TDI owners with Tuning Boxes fitted!!

Featured Replies

I had a look at the socket where the tuning box will go, and there doesn't seem to be much play.

It seems a little tight on space, due to the 2 or 3 other wires coming of the same cable at the socket.

Is there enough play in these wirse to insert a tuning box, or does the sleeving have to be stripped further back?

P.s. Photos would be excellent.

Cheers

There is enough room without altering the loom or sleeving. My tuning box fitting instructions said the box would fit back on the multiplug bracket but the wires looked tight and the box fouled on other equipment.

Instead I used two strong cable ties and strapped the box to the existing multiplug bracket.

Can't really get pics without stripping off the engine cover.

Cheers Lee,

I was worried someone might tell me that.

I had a look, and the only way to fit the box is to the left hand side, but its the left socket which fits into the bracket.

Seems like i may have to invest in some cable ties, or think of some other way to secure the box where i can remove it easily when it comes to service time.

Lee, is your tuning box all the one unit, or one with the remote box attached?

What do you think of it, and what did it cost ?(if you don't mind me askin)

JD

It's an all in one unit from Dragon Performance.

Dragon are selling the last few abs plastic boxes off on ebay but they are already out of 10pin units so offer a free upgrade to the new alloy units.

The actual box can be seen at mrhoot They are listed at

how did you guys now what was a good tuningbox. i would also like to buy one, but how do you know that a box of 300EU is better than one of only 80EU?

i ask this because some german sites are heavily advertising on ebay.

Just read the feedback on e-bay and also read the feedback on the manufacturers website.

The 30day return policy that Dragon offer clinched the deal for me, if it wasn't any good I'd have sent it back in the packaging supplied.

I fitted an alloy tuning box a few months ago, the only change I made to the suggested fitting was to remove multi pin connector from its bracket, fit the box and put back onto the bracket. also the temperature sensor had to be disconnected to give a bit more room while fitting the box, then reconnected.

And yes it does exactly what it says on the box, much more torque a bit more smoke, and not a great loss on fuel consumption (dificult not to use the extra ooomph)

I had to disconnect the other plug (possibly temp sensor) and strip the sleeving back about an inch to fit the box, but it fitted back into the bracket (snugly).

I used to have an expensive tuning box, but this time i bought the German one on ebay for around

Dragon do a German made TUV one but that unit requires a connection to the MAF sensor.

Both the ABS and later Alloy units that require no external connection are made the UK.

Don't buy Dragon stuff off their website for

The unit i have doesn't require the connector wire to the MAF and is made in germany. The plug fits in as normal between the existing sockets, but the box housing the electronics is housed seperatley. I have mine fixed to the battery housing using the cable ties supplied. Its easier to adjust this way as the engine cover doesn't have to be removed.

One screw to adjust (inside the unit) and it comes with a preset 20% gain in power. i cannot see any difference in the equivalent dragon unit, apart from the hike in price

Lee' date=' have you adjusted your tuning box from its original state? I'm considering a trial and error to maybe increase mine slightly.

JD[/quote']

My box came set at 20% increase, I left it at that for a few weeks then felt the urge to tinker.

I upped the pot on mine a quarter of a turn to start with, smoke was not noticably increased, top end power increased slightly but bottom end torque was vastly increased and the car pulled strong and smoothly from little over 1000rpm with a good surge near 2000rpm.

I kept it at this for a while then decided to try another qaurter of a turn, pull was even stronger form low revs but not as smooth around 2000rpm and a little boomy at higher revs, smoke also increased. After a couple of days we had a really cold morning and I had the glow plug light flashing at me. It says in the Dragon instructions that this may happen if you have it turned up too high but is not harmfull.

I've since turned it down just less than a quarter of a turn so should be somewhere near maximum I would have thought.

hi ihad fitted the power box from east coast racing(www.dieselchiptuning.co.uk)the sockets were perfect and i could feel the power increse

Seeing that the last post on this thread was just over a month ago, I was wondering how you were all getting on with the Dragon

I think you are worrying too much mate, fuel mixtue etc is only critical in petrol engines where you can get pre-ingnition and piston failure.

Most diesels dont even have a throttle, all the air that is available is fed into the engine, fuel is then added depending on how much power your right foot is asking for. If you feed in less fuel you get less power, if you feed in more fuel you get more power upto the point when there isn't enough air for combustion and you stat getting smoke from the exhaust.

Most modern diesels run with excess air to ensure you don't exceed emission limits, the tuning boxes allow you to increase the fueling upto the combustion limit. Even if you turn it up to far the only thing you will get is smoke.

A remap gets more power as the tuner will also lift the boost pressure so you have more air and are able to add even more fuel than a tuning box.

The risk fom either option is that you are putting more strain on the drive train components, the higher the torque and power the more you are at risk of breaking something. Saying that a good tuner should be able to give you a component friendly smooth map.

I'll finish by saying I've been 100% happy with my tuning box and on the 110TDi it shouldn't cause you any problems with fault logs on the engine management.

I've run two Octavia TDi's on different tuning boxes and had no problems at all.

The first one was Alpin Tuning Module from DMS Automotive. Bit fiddly to fit, needed cable-tied onto the injector pump multipin bracket and a wire spliced into the MAF. But it certainly did the trick and ran for 67,000 in 18 months without a hiccup. Also the local Skoda dealership was happy to service the car with it in place and were adamant that the warranty was unaffected.

The second unit is on my current Octavia and is a PSI Powerbox. Very easy to fit: just connect to the multipin connector, loads of spare lead so that you can easily mount it anywhere within the engine compartment. It has two settings, although PSI recommend doing various changes to the air induction system before moving onto the higher setting and I haven't been brave enough to go against that advice.

Again, the local dealership is happy to service the car and keep the warranty intact. The car has now done nearly 60k in the last 15 months and hasn't missed a beat, so I can thoroughly recommend it. It's also fun to chase petrol cars up steep motorway hills as they run out of torque and watch their drivers look on in disbelief as the Octavia sweeps majestically and effortlessly past them: priceless ;)

Hope this helps?

I agree with all that has been said. My HOPA tuning box in my last golf ran for 3 years and over 70k miles without a problem, and with great results.

My new tuning box in the Octy has run fine since i had it fitted in december. Great power increase, and no noticeable decrease in fuel economy. This box only cost

We have seen poor running on alot of cars with tuning boxes fitted, and the ones we have removed and chip'd with a +30 bhp map and been over the moon with the increase in power over the plug in unit. And they normally see a 4-7 mpg improvement :)

Thanks for the feedback, it was very encouraging to know that you people have used the Dragon Performance tuning box for so many miles without any problems.

I have brought a box at a reasonable price on ebay. I managed to fit it without scraping my hands too much! (What is the smallest tie wraps in the world supposed to be used for?).

The additional power is very impressive and I

I just bought my Octavia 110bhp TDi the other week and I've fitted a Dragon tuning box. As per previous posts it did fit without having to make any changes to the loom but it didn't clip back into place so it's just cable-tied to the original mounting.

The original factory setting saw an immediate increase in performance, but the traction control seemed to be kicking in a bit too often even in pretty good driving conditions and I had the glow plug light flashing once or twice when the engine was cold so I've turned it down about 1/4 turn for the time being. I'm still in the tweaking stage really so I'll give it a couple of days and see what happens, if I don't see the glow plug light again I might turn it back up 1/8 turn or so, see how that goes.

I'm really happy with mine so far!

all the above posts seam to be regarding the analogue boxes, the digital ones dont log error codes do they?
