Fabia failed MOT on emissions help

Featured Replies

A family member has had their mk 1.4 fabia fail the mot on emissions and has bought a new one but wants to sell me theirs for £300 but i dont know what or cost would be involved in putting it right...

The car has only done 48,000 miles with full history and the fail readings for the emissions are as follows...

C/O 1st Fast Idle 8.5% (limit to pass is 0.30%) second fast idle 11.16%

HC 1st fast idle 2.62% (limit to pass is 200%) second fast idle 766%

Lambda 1st fast idle 0.74% second fast idle 0.667%

Natural Idle rading was 12.004%

Everything on the emissions has failed, the car isnt blowing blue smoke and there is no engine management light on and one lambda sensor has been replaced but its still failing.

Any advice on if its going to cost a fortune would be great and what is likley to be causing this problem with emissions, before i part with money. I know its cheap at £300 but if its going to cost £2,000 to fix its going to not worth it.

Thanks everyone.

Is it the 16v or the 8v (MPI) Fabia

Sorry its a 1.4 MPI 8 valve engine

What condition is the air filter in ?

Some folk remove the air filter to pass an MOT !

DB.

air filter looks fine and doesnt look too old, dont know if to get this or not

Check both lambdas, ECU engine temp sensor and cat.

Cheers ken, how can you check a cat it doesnt seem to be crumbling inside when rattled but on start up it is chugging (chug chug chug) doesnt smell rich. Will have to get it into a garage to check the ecu temp sensor. thanks.

Assuming it's not a piston ring problem, my guess is that it is the front Lambda sensor.

Do you get any codes?

Assuming it's not a piston ring problem

IIRC the piston ring problem only affects the 16v AUB

Engine temp sensor would be a good shout - this can be checked for correct resistance if you can find the correct values somewhere.

Was the lambda changed for a genuine or OEM equivalent brand, or a cheap crappy thing?

The cat can be faulty without it making any horrible noises - lots of pattern ones on the market but will be in the region of £150 still.

The lambda was a second hand one but I never fitted it so dont know which one of the 2 it was, how can I get the resistance values for the temp sensor. Thanks again.
