white noise / rushing sound when I put yeti in reverse..

Featured Replies

Hi, I don't know if I have a problem, or I just need to get used to funny noises..

Yesterday I noticed that whenever I put the car in reverse, a rushing sound seemed to come from the parking sensor display. It sounded a lot like white noise on a radio. The parking sensor display came on and worked as normal while this noise was going on. When I came out of reverse gear, the sound disappeared straight away.

I also noticed a trickling water noise several times whilst driving about. I think this would be to do with the air conditioning, which was on, fairly cool. If the rushing sound/ white noise were also to do with the air con, would it stop and start so abruptly?

The garage said they would only be able to diagnose if it was actually happening when they saw it. Naturally, today it has stopped happening!

Could the heavy rain we had yesterday explain the aircon working harder to remove more humidity, therefore be noisier? When I went back to the car later there was a large amount of condensation in largish drops on the inside of the windscreen, just where the air hits the screen, don't know it that is normal either, as I haven't really had this in my previous car.

Hoping someone else may know about this, love the car and don't want the dashboard interfered with so soon!

Isnt the noise just the A/C system swithing to recirc mode when reverse is engaged?

Yes, the manual says that the aircon switches to recirc mode when you engage reverse gear so the system doesn't pull exhaust gases in and choke you.

It could be - I haven't even used that function yet! It doesn't explain why it didn't happen before or since yesterday when in reverse.. but I'll try the recirculate button to see what that sounds like, thank you for your thoughts. :-)

It could of course be that you stick your head out of the window as you reverse and then gone backwards very fast :)

Was the A/C actually running every time?

Yes, I have a tendancy to leave it on..

Just tested the recirculate, it is lovely and quiet, I could hardly hear it, but maybe when it's working hard it sounds different..

Possible that one of the factory workers is stuck in there? Sorry.......Most VW group cars that I have driven do the old whooshing noise when you put it into reverse. It is the air recirculation cutting in as others have said.

ok, thanks, I shall stop worrying about it :)

In modern VAG autos, when you engage the reverse, a number of functions (depending on the trim level) are activated.

The rear wiper sweeps if the front wipers are on.

The climatronic engages recirculation mode.

The passenger mirror lowers.

The park assist beeps.

The Audio unit lowers the volume and displays a graphic aid.

The rear view camera hatch opens and the video is displayed in the multimedia unit.

Most of the above functions are more or less audible, and many of them apply to our beloved Yeti.

Had the same noise on my Mk 1 Fabia since new. Whoosing noise when reverse engaged and air con is on.

It is nice to see that a thorough-going review of systems is conducted before designing a ne w model, so that faulty or ineffective designs used on predecessor models are not simply perpetuated for ever and a day through a lazy design ethos.

When I first noticed it I took it into a dealer (Not my usual) who spent three hours trying to find out what it was (Shared dealership, not VAG specilaist) including phoning Skoda. They determined it was normal and were pretty cross at having wasted 3 hours, un remunerated. :giggle:

I understand that the aircon is designed to operate like this to prevent noxious exhaust fumes entering the passenger cabin when you are reversing into a garage. Quite why the designer's should think that the inclusion of this "Human factors" feature is required above all others when the vehicle has obviously more significant and unremedied problems with exhaust emissions (Like the engine using a litre of engine oil every 1000 miles, most of which disappears up the exhaust pipe into the atmosphere) is beyond me. I think its called un-joined-up vehicle manufacture.

However, a couple of years later, when I acquired a laptop and VAG. Com diagnosis kit I discovered that the reciculation flap was, and has been since, giving an electrical fault reading (see extract from VAG. Com report below)

Despite 5 annual services i note that the fault is still there - presume that its just too costly/difficult to rectify (whole dashboard has to come out ?)

Address 08: Auto HVAC Labels: 6Q0-820-045.lbl

Part No: 6Y0 820 045

Component: Klimaanlage X0830

3 Faults Found:

01596 - Motor for Outside/Recirculated Air Flap (V154)

30-10 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent

01596 - Motor for Outside/Recirculated Air Flap (V154)

29-10 - Short to Ground - Intermittent

01596 - Motor for Outside/Recirculated Air Flap (V154)

28-10 - Short to Plus - Intermittent

Can't recall the aircon light switching to re-circulation mode when I select reverse.

More Fooky Fabia electronics.

I suspect that the reciculation flap may not be closing fully, hence the noise. Bad assembly ?

I reckon half the problem is that the system designers put support for so many exotic bells and whistles in the ecu/wiring (Presumably to keep the marketeers and bubble head consumers happy), many of which are not used on the lower priced models, that you get an array of conflicts/unsupported conditions on the less well equipped models. And this is compounded by unbelievably deficient service advice to dealers.

Here's a word of advice for them. KISF. Keep it simple Fc*kwitts.

Fewer musical ashtrays, more back to basics.
