Fixed Clunking noise on front end today

Featured Replies

I don't believe it I think i got it.

With reference to this earlier link i think i finnally cracked it

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/157894-help-with-clunking-noise/

I had the car it the air yet again today focussing on anything that could cause the clunking as per previous post.

Turns out it was the drivers side drive shaft.

Initially I ruled out Drive shaft as i got no knocking when turning sharply left or right.

I decided to undo the Diff end rubber gater, and found a runny oil dripping out that must of mixed with water, and not much other than a really dry joint.

So I cleaned it out and repacked the CV joint with grease.

Then went for a spin and would you believe it no clunking. I am going to change the drive shaft when i get more time as running dry has probably caused a short life span.

Hope this helps someone.

Also I noticed that when car is lowered the ARB drop link bolt is very close to the alloy FMIC pancake pipe sitting in the arch. I would say mine was almost touching it.

So whilst I was under the car I angle grinded of some of the waste end of the bolt. I also moved the Pancake pipe jubilee clip (screw end) around to the back out the way of teh drive shaft too.

Here is a pic prior to me cutting it.

Wow that is close! Glad you fixed the noise

Mystery solved! And lucky you noticed that bolt, would've been a bit of a shock if it suddenly punched a hole through the boost pipe!

nice, well done matey!

Yep, too right, I only noticed that prior to raising car in the air when I was looking underneath with a light to see if anything was catching, suprising what is close to moving parts when you lower the car. Like the Jubilee clip on the pipe near to drive shaft in that second pic. When you jack the car up in the air you change all the locations in relation to how the car would be on the road. So I can see why things are missed or not considered as a issue when car is in the air. It is good to get the car up on a 4 poster to check these kind of things.

Cheers now all i need to do is fix that annoying rear brake squeal.. It never ends does it!!

also looking out for a engine sump guard,

Anyone got a part number for it . I think it is solid metal....

was one for sale one the mk4 forum, they are well well heavy however......not great to be honest, you might be better off fitting one of these (mk4 shallow sump)

http://www.g-werks.co.uk/Products_Engine_SchrickProducts/Default.aspx if you are worried about being to low as its cheaper and is a better replacement part.

Funnily enough my mate just bought one as he wrecked his modded 4x4 octy sump and needed a new one so i suggested this, it seemed like a better idea to us.

Dieselgeek also do uprated sumps for the mk4 golf, but again cost more and add weight.

Nice idea that shallow sump. I guess you loose the sensor that normally sits in the sump. is it the oil level warning light or oil temp warning?

The plug thing on the bottom is the level I think

yes you can retap in the sensor, my friend is having his done today/tomorrow i think, will give you more info when i know more.

It is a nice idea though and negates the need for a heavy sump guard unless you do a lot of offroading imo.

Nice one thinking of defo going this route. Let me know how it goes

Does that shallow sump reduce the oil capacity, or is it a wider pan to compensate?

Edited by Bowders1

it shouldnt do as the amount of oil required should not need to be reduced, i think there will be less 'void' or free space in the sump instead. Its being fitted at the mo, will let you know when we know more!
