Skoda Superb 2005 Dip Beam Adjustment

Featured Replies

Hi all

My dip beam seems to be very low, The car has xenon lights fitted but it also has a headlight range adjuster in the car that dosnt seem to do anything,

I read in the cars handbook that the xenon lights are self adjusting but if mine has the headlamp range adjustment fitted does this mean that the car has the wrong lights fitted?

I found bits of old lights in the boot thats what is making me wonder if they have been changed.

Chris

You'll need access to VAG-COM or have to visit a dealer to get them adjusted I'm afraid.

You need to access the relevant control module (55 I think) to get them to move to their datum position, the control module uses this for reference so it knows where the lights are.

Once in the datum position you manually adjust the aim, when adjusted you confirm the change and it's done.

Before you do this make sure the light is seated correctly on it's mounts

Hi Cledwen

I have the Vag Com Tool but when I go to the address 55 for the xenon lights it comes up on screen no response from controller, I have tried with dip beam on and with dip beam off but it makes no difference.

Do you know what could be causing this?

From what you say, it seems pretty clear that the car was not fitted with xenons when built (bits in the boot, and there shouldn't be an adjuster in the car. Presumably, it's not an Elegance model?). What sort of job it's like to retrofit them I don't know, but I guess this was done either incorrectly, or not very well. Good luck with getting it sorted.

Hi Sam

I have had a look on auto trader for cars of the same model and the headlights look the same as mine ,

I will have to see if I can find a picture somewhere of the comfort model headlamps and compare.

Regards

Chris

They all look the same.

It does sound like a retro fit job, possibly using xenon housings and an after market xenon kit.

Try parking facing a wall. Turn the ignition off and headlights on, then switch the ignition back on and you should see the light beam drop and then rise again as it checks its position... If it doesn't do this then it would tend to support the theory of a retrofit system.

The comfort was not fitted with Xenon's as std and TBH i can't see anyone adding them when the elegance had them as std.

The Xenon and halogen headlights also look identical. As previously stated it looks like an after market kit has been fitted, so they will not appear on VCDS.

What bits have you found in the boot - the bulb covers by any chance?

Hi Gizmo

Thanks for the reply

I see you have a superb comfort also would it be possible you could send me a picture of your lights so I compare

Regards

Chris

Sorry Chris but I don't have access to my external HDD at the moment where my pictures are stored (I'm in the middle of decorating the study) but visually there is no difference between the two as they both use the projector headlight.

The only visual differences you would notice is factory fit xenon's would not have the thumb wheel headlight adjustment next to the headlight switch (as xenon's use self levelling, factory fit xenon's will also have headlamp washers (fitted behind the plastic 'chrome' cover at the bottom of the headlight) leaver the cover down if you are unsure if they are fitted to your car, both of these are a legal requirement so if they are missing then yours are 100% retro fitted.

Hi Gizmo

I took a bulb out of the car today and they say on them type D2S, 35 W Gas discharge light,

I thought these lights were xenon but it looks like there not

Regards

Chris

A D2S bulbs is the xenon bulb used in the Superb xenons.

If you are able to take photos of the rear of the light units then it may help us to see if you have a retro fit ballasts.

It sounds like someone may have wired OEM xenons into the car minus the self leveling system. Do the headlight washers work?

There is ofcourse the possibility that someone has just fitted Xenon Head Lamps to the car which obviously does not cater for the Xenon Head Lamps, meaning the adjustment on the dash will not work, you will have no Automatic Head Lamp levelling and also no Head Lamp Wash.......... ;)

Thats exactly whats wrong someone has fitted the xenon headlights on this car, I suppose I will have to buy 2 headlights now for the mot .

I wouldnt mind the lights are in good condition I will have to try and sell them to get some money back.

I cant understand someone changing the headlights and putting these lights in,

My luck will change yet :)

Why change them? The Xenon's are 3 times better than the Halogens and therefore you best off keeping them on the car, most MOT places aren't interested or have a clue about legal requirements on Xenon's and are just bothered on them being set up correctly, if I were you I would just check the beam pattern yourself, adjust on the back of the lamps and you will be fine............

If you do decide to sell the Xenon's then I am sure there will be plenty of people on here that would take them off you...........
