Cleaning products for my car...am I missing anything essential?

Featured Replies

Hey there, im going to invest in some stuff to make my car nice and shiney and was wondering what you guys thought to my preliminary decisions.

Going to take advantage of halfrauds 3 for 2 offer and get:

meguiars smooth surface clay kit which consists of

'473ml Mist and Wipe 'Quick Detailer'

118ml Cleaner Wax

Supreme Shine Microfibre Towel

Clay Bars - individually wrapped x 2'

gold class shampoo

and

hot rims all wheel cleaner.

I alreay have a few autoglym products for the glass so I'm not spending anymore there. I'm pretty sure my dad has some wax of some description that I'll use also.

Will claying my car really make that much difference?

Any help and tips appreciated :)

Pete.

After you have clayed, do the whole car with Autoglym Super Resin Polish and then AG Hi Def Wax (The latter not cheap)..... but awesome!!

I'm 90% sure that I have some of the auto glum stuff. Should I just apply that with a cloth all over?

I'm already stretching to buy that stuff so will I be okay to settle for whatever wax my dad has for now?

Also, any ideas on cleaning around my sticker above the front light? Just clay/wax whatever around it, or will I be okay to go over it?

I'm new to this car cleaning malarky.

Yes! Claying the car will make a lot of difference! I too am new to this and have the same clay kit as you. Wash the car, use the clay then get the polish out! The cleaner wax in the clay kit is, I believe, a sort of all in one type polish and wax, therefore suitable as a final coat product, However I have some meguiars nxt gen tech wax and it really gives an extra shine. Autoglym Super Resin Polish is fantastic IMO and goes on and comes off easily enough too. You might want to invest in some sponge polish/wax applicators as they give a more even coating, they are about £5 from Halfords IIRC.

Otherwise, good luck with the cleaning and don't forget to post up some before and after shots. Oh and personally I don't rate the Megs hot rims wheel cleaner, I thought the Halfords own brand was better. And something called Bilberrys wheel cleaner seems to be a lot more popular and safer for your wheels. Not tried it myself but seems cheap enough to buy from sites like www.cleanyourcar.com etc.

so, just got home from work and got the meg's clay kit, some 2.0 wax of some description, in a spray bottle, some gold class shampoo (only had the big bottles:( ) and a microfibre mit. spent loads more money than i can afford but **** it ey?

hopefully getting my clean on tomorrow so i will get some pics up after that.

the order im plannin on using stuff is: gold shampoo, clay, the clay wax stuff, 2.0 wax and then auto glym wsuper resin finish. thats right yeah?

anddd, will i have to avoid the area above my headloight with my briskoda sticker thing?

cheers.

I used to use the Megs Hot Rims and was happy with the clean it gave, however, I was told it was quite acidic so switched to Bilberry and  it's tremendous! Smells nice too!

Honestly I've used umpteen different wheel cleaners and this by far gives the best results!

One more thing I would say is use the 2 bucket method when cleaning your pride and joy! 1 bucket to wash in and another with just water to rinse out your washmitt after every sweep! You'll reduce the chance of putting swirls and small scratches on the bodywork!

You may have already seen it but this what Baker21 did for my car....over the top? maybe, but the shine is still there months later and it is still very easy to keep clean.

I am still investing in bits a pieces to make up my "kit" but it is expensive so I buy it as and when I can afford it

Super resin polish BEFORE the Nxt 2.0 wax.

I think with the Meguiar's clay, you're best off drying the car after washing before you clay - only use the included quick detailer spray for lubricating the clay. I've done it that way before and had great results. Yesterday though, I clayed my wife's Corsa without drying it first and I was left with a hell of a lot of marring. It was a new piece of clay and I was re-moulding it regularly so the water left from rinsing is the only thing that I can think could have caused it. Took me ages today to fix it all without a machine, just with scratch-x. I then did two coats of SRP and finished with NXT 2.0 wax. Looks good, but my god it took some effort.

its probably not the water as such, but more because any additional lube wouldn't be as effective as its being mixed with the excess water. i find a stronger (like 1:1 or 2:1) mix of car shampoo and water does the trick as a lube.
