Dealer mumbo jumbo?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Car has just been in to the dealers due to an intermittent fault where - normally within first 5 minutes of the journey - the mgmt light comes on with 3 beeps a couple of times and is occasionally accompanied by a random second symptom (loss of P/S).

Anyway, dealer checked it over and said that it was just the battery running low on charge and that they have charged it up and it should be fine...altenator is working normally as well apparantly!

I didnt get to speak to a tech so what do you guys think? Make sense, or am I being given a load of pony?

Cheers

The faults do sound like low power related ones.

Do you only do short journeys?

If so, then the battery probably was low on power and will be again without a reasonably long journey to recharge.

Mmm

Could be the steering angle sensor

When the key is turned on , does the battery light come on too?

Sarah

if car starts ok ...is used regulary it can hardly be low on power ..... imo

Actually it could, if the sprague clutch in the alternator pulley is sticking in the "open" position sometimes.

Thanks for getting back to me guys and girls...

Still not sure why a low battery would trigger that kind of thing, but guess that it is feasible - I do daily 30-40 min runs each way so would hope that thats enough to keep it topped up?

Interesting! Yes, the battery light does come on when I turn the key, along with all the other lights which all (including the battery light) disappear once the engine has been started. Where is the steering angle sensor located out of interest?

Interesting again! How would I go about self diagnosing that one?

Cheers

Just to give an update - took car back in to dealers as the symptoms continued and they have diagnosed a faulty power steering pump and broken cable to the battery (not sure which one). Will let you know if it works! Cheers
