Real help needed re: ABS & ASR fault!

Featured Replies

Checking under the bonnet today found that the flat metal fuse in point number 4 had blown - cant find any mention of no4 in the haynes manual - it looks like a 40amp one. Any ideas???

According to the manual it's for the ABS or TCS or ESP (see pages 188 and 189)

I thought you had a vRS, and don't all vRS come with ABS and either ASR (which is TCS by another name - Anti Slip Regulation vs Traction Control System) or the optional ESP?

I ment i have no ABS or TCS working - the lights are on the dash and they arent working!

Ok - updated:- fitted a new fuse today, wiped the error codes and drove less than 5 foot before the lights came back on and i once again have no ABS or TCS. Any other suggestions before I go to a dealer??

HELP!

Probably going to be the ABS unit, as it is also used the for ASR function. Have about £600 ready. If you get one from a breakers yard, make sure you get the right one, as they are not inter-changeable,

Check the simple things first.

1. Have a look under all 4 corners and see if one of the sensor wires has snapped or shorted out on something.

2. Have a look at the wiring around the abs module to see if there are any short circuits.

3. Re-check ANYTHING you have been doing on the car - make sure you didn't trap a wire or two

New info - code read again today.

00301 - V39 on Vagcom

Any idea?

Where's the rest of the fault code? 00301 is just the number - It should have some reference to a module/sensor/part and describe the fault briefly

Google did a bit of work

00301 ABS Return-flow Pump (V39) .

did the fuse blow again, or is it still fine. If its blown then suspect a short circuit somewhere.

The fuse is still fine - cleared the code - started the car and the light stayed off, moved the car just on tickover & the lights came back on

I fear that MT is correct above - and it'll be the ABS unit.

I had similar symptoms on my mkiv golf about 5 years ago (i.e start up, no errors/lights, move car - and when revs hit 2k the ABS unit attempts to 'fire up' and error occurs / lights up dash.)

After a lot of searching, it was finally diagnosed as the ABS pump motor (within the ABS unit).

Car was out of warranty, so I went to VW for a quote for the work and this came back at somewhere in the region of £1,200!!! Unforunately at the time, I just couldn't afford this.

After some more searching I was pointed in the direction of a company who repair the ABS unit called BBA-Reman. Their main office was local to me and had a 'brake specialist' garage next door to them. Car was booked in and after a week (and a £700 bill) car was ready for collection.

However, after about 12 months of happy motoring (with no faults at all), the same problem/errors occured again. I returned to the garage and after some discussion it was agreed that they would repair the unit again (FOC).

All fine for another 12months, until it happened again! I returned to the garage again and this time, to my horror, discovered that it had closed down! (looking back, I can see why)

Ultimately this fault destroyed any faith I had that my golf was 'reliable'. Over a 2 year period, I felt lucky if I could start the car and drive away without seeing 'that' light on my dash. :'(

I'd strongly suggest that you visit a VAG specialist to have the fault correcly diagnosed. BBA-Reman still have an office in Kent, so there is the option of posting them your ABS unit for repair. I'd advise paying the extra to have either Skoda or a VAG specialist to sort the problem to give you piece of mind should any future problems occur, you would have some support.
