Keys...

Featured Replies

Quick question in case anyone (Big K?) can help :)

At the moment I have a "key shaped" key - with the r/c/l controls on the 'top' of the key.

If I remember correctly, there's also a rectangular key with a "flick knife" action which causes the key itself to spring out on a hinge.

Does anyone know if the two key types are interchangeable? i.e. could I use the 'lozenge' key with a Fabia? And how much would it set me back?

Yet another idea in a long list of minor "mods" :D

The flip-key is standard on the vRS, and I suppose it's also standard on the L&K, and perhaps Elegance trim models such as the 4x4 (any L&K or 4x4 owners want to confirm that?)

The dealer reckoned they keys are "90 quid to replace" when enthusiastically selling me the benefits of Supagard Keycare. As for compatability - dunno, although I can't image they are much different to the ordinary keys...

I'm pretty sure that the demo fabia I drove had a flip-key... It was elegance trim though...

I've thought about r/c/l as a minor upgrade for me as I just have the key in the lock thingy at the moment (which is handy for shutting the windows though) - However I reckon it could be a lot of money, and I reckon I could spend it better elsewhere on the car (or down the pub :dtp: )

Hello,

I have flickknife keys for my Fabia, standard issue on the elegance trim. As far as I know as long as you have the code strip for the key you can get it programmed to suit, cost when I enquired about 5 months ago was @

My L&K has a "flick blade" key with lock & unlock buttons.

I have the fixed key with unlock and lock buttons on it. Would be interested

in a flick key tho as it should sit easier in the pocket with all the other junk I have to

carry around on my keyring...

That's what I was thinking too, Rob. Takes up a bit less room and looks a bit more flash :D

I have a flick key with remote....

..but don't currently have remote central locking ;)

Have the switchblade key too (4x4 Elegance).

Understood it costs 150 euro to get one  , so 90 quid seems about right. Quite an expensive piece of car-opening equipment there!

I have to say that I was very surprised to get 2 "flick blade" type keys with my L&K - usually you get one decent key and 2nd key is a basic type - very generous!

Flick key for Fabia has standard facility, one button for lock, one for unlock (single prod driver only, double prod whole car), and another button for tailgate . Also if you extend the push for lock, it switches off the internal movement sensor but leaves perimeter and immob. on.

The boot release button will only work for elegance trimmed fabs though...?

It may work as both would have the system likely built in and since all models have the electronic soft touch boot handle it may just require it to be activated and also to have the right key. I have the flick key myself and I have managed to crack the chrome bit for keyrings on one side! Superglue doesn't work so you just have to click it in and hope that you don't lose the keyrings!

"electronic soft touch boot handle"?

On mine it looks pretty mechanical - pull the lever next to the petrol cap release (also "mechanical") and you hear a pop as the boot is released slightly... or am I missing something? :D

Another key-related question here. My key has only recently stopped working the RCL via the push buttons , i assume the battery has gone dead. Are these availible at the dealer and how much do they charge to change them?

electric soft touch boot handle- inside boot lock is a micro switch that when lightly touched the boot will open (opposite to mechanical that you have to pull/push lever manually) as for changing the key fobs i can't see a problem (apart from the cost) but me thinks if my memory serves me correctly that the different fobs operate at different frequencies. they are very easy (for me) to programme when i get a minute at work i will try it and let you know. As regards to the boot open fuction this is only available for elagance versions if others wanted they would have to buy a legance c/locking ecu (lots of dosh) hope this helps big k.

Duncan - does the LED on the key still flash when the buttons are pushed? If it doesn't

then you've probably got a flat battery. No idea how much they cost to change, but I'd

imagine it can't be that much...

If the LED is still flashing, you might need to refer to your owner's manual. There's a

section in there near the keys about "synchronisation" within the locking system. That

is, the key has a "code" and the key-button-pressed-detector-whatsit in the car also

has this "code". When you press the buttons a certain number of times, the code

changes on the key, and if you're within range of the car this will synchronise the

locking system.

So if your button gets pressed quite a bit out of range of the car, you might find the

code on the key changes but not the code on the car. This will prevent the RCL

working.

Or something like that - the manual explains it better, and also shows a remedy.

Anyone care to guess what Brian was looking for in the manual last night then? :D

Rob.

Apparently, with both keys, you can reset it...

Place one key in the ignition, and turn the ignition on (don't think you have to start the engine).

Then, get out and close the door, and hold the other remote lock button for more than 6 seconds....

it should pick up the code eventually, then repeat for unlock...

not tried it myself, but thats what I've been told.

;)

nearly right tavia 4x4 one key in ign other key in drivers door turn key lock or unlock whilst pressing lock/unlock button on remote and visa versa

Well the one on the boot is eletonic as opposed to what the most cars get (button or lock to push in, the Octavia gets a handle to pull.) In the Fabia you just need to brush your hand against it to pop it up. I am pretty sure this is in all the models as well as the boot release handle!

Details of how to change the battery/batteries are in our FAQs. You can fit either one CR2032 or 2 CR2016. Boots sell them.

I must admit it would be good to have the key fob operated boot release on mine too, if only to impress other shoppers in Sainsburys car park!

My mate has an elegence Fabia which has the two stage unlocking system: I think a short press of the unlock button just unlocks the drivers door, while a longer press (or maybe two presses) opens the whole car up.

Nice feature that i'd like on mine - anyone know if its possible on the Comfort?

Also I can disable the ultrasonics on the alarm with two presses of the lock button. Proved handy when I spent the night asleep in my car in Snowdonia!

yes fabia tdi you can have same feature (unlocking only one door) on your car ask your dealer to programme c/locking ecu to do this.
