URGENT: Fuel Filter - Location please

Featured Replies

Hey, (urgent because I will be attempting to change it within the next hour)

My Haynes manual is rediculously ambiguous and states in one place that the fuel filter is under the car and in another that it's in the engine bay. Which is correct for a 2002 1.9tdi (long service)? I've opened the bonnet and there appears to be what looks like a fuel filter (well the one i've been given by the parts place anyway), but I think I had a peek under the car and there's a similar looking device there. Can anyone clear this up please?

Really sorry about this post. I just went out and led under the car (in my work clothes  ) and there is no such filter under the car - It's just pipes going to what I assume is the fuel tank! The filter must be the one in the engine bay. Sorry again.

The fuel filter on your car(tdi) is under the bonnet & on mine a (vrs) its underneath next to the fuel tank.

For petrol engines it is under the car, just forward of the right hand rear wheel, for diesel engines it is in the engine bay between the coolant expansion tank and the right hand headlamp.

On the 110TDi it is between the coolant expansion tank and the windscreen wash tank, drives side near to the front of the engine bay. Has 1 pipe in, 1 pipe out, and an additional pipe assembly which chips into the top of it.

Hey, do you know where the fuel pump fuse is? or relay, I need to depressurise the fuel lines to swap the filter over. Cheers

Just pull out the clip for the double pipe assembly and use some mole grips or similar on the the other two clips. I recommend that once the new filter is in in place you fill it with some diesel - the car will take a lot of cranking to get the system full of diesel again. Do it is small bursts so as not to burn anything out - better hope your battery is full of juice too!

no need to pull any fuses or relays to do the change. You will need a philips screwdriver too.

Thank you so much! I've got some injector cleaner to pour into the filter. Not sure how to get it in though, I've duct taped a bottle cut into a funnel around one of the pipes as I'm not sure what the big hole (where the clip for the double pipe clip is) is for.

*** FOR THE PURPOSE OF PEOPLE USING THE SEARCH FUNCTION ***

I did this in the end, no problem. There is no fuse, because the fuel pump is mechanical. The lines don't need to be depressurised and fuel/injector cleaner can be inserted via the big hole, but attach the fuel lines to the filter first.

The bottom of the fuel filter has a bleed valve, for bleeding off water. I used this to fill the new filter with diesel (and injector cleaner). Thanks to anyone who helped.
