Considering buying a new Scout

Featured Replies

Hi,

Looking at buying a new Octavia scout as prices new seem to be nearly matching any second hand ones out there. Just changed jobs and will be driving 60 miles a day so looking at the diesel.

Just wondering what options are definitely worth it - considering the variable floor as i have a dog that will be in the back and having the storage space underneath seems handy (plus enabling a flatter area in the boot) though the reception to the variable floors seem mixed.

Also considering getting the MDI option for an ipod or does the mp3 input render this redundant?

Is there any other options worthy of consideration - how much room does a full spare to a space saver take up? Are the floor mats worth it?

Also has anyone had any issues with drivethedeal - they are looking like the cheapest option , though will be looking at going to some local dealers over the weekend to double check

Any advice appreciated

Hi Utarg and welcome! Buying a Scout at the moment is a great deal. Mine is two years old and has been reliable, good to drive and reasonably economical (getting average 42mpg solo and around 29mpg towing 1200kg caravan).

The Scout is well equipped to start with - ESP, rear parking sensors, cruise, climate control etc. However there are some 'must haves'. In my view they are: Maxidot and spare wheel. MDI would be nice and I ordered the MF steering wheel which works well. The Scout by the way has good quality carpet mats as standard - I find that they are relatively easy to clean off with a stiff bristle brush once mud etc dries off.

I don't have the variable boot floor and don't think I would have it to be honest. There have been quite a few occasions I have carried heavy items and have been glad to have that 2 inch lip to stop the items sliding forward. I know you could take the variable floor out but that just seems more of a nuisance. However I know that some posters love the variable boot floor!

Good luck with the hunt!

I ordered the spare (16" steel) and front parking sensors. Also ordered a full size 17" alloy.

Delivery early may can't wait

I got my scout last week. The options I chose were the spare wheel - no brainer in my opinion. Doesn't spoil the boot space at all. I didn't get the variable boot floor as I have a dog and a boot liner. I would have to remove the liner everytime to access it. I also got the memory seat option as both my wife and I drive and I'm 6"4 and she isn't. You also get nice heated electric mirrors with this as well. I got the mf wheel and maxi dot as I like volume controls etc on wheel and maxi gives some nice options such as tourist mode for driving in Europe. I got a parrot fitted instead of bluetooth because of iPhone compatibility and finally I went for the xenon lights. Purely a luxury! But I love em!

Fab car. Get one you will love it.

Thanks for the quick responses!

Good to know the spare wheel doesn't use up any boot space - will think about the variable boot floor as with a dog i was considering getting a boot liner - it would be in use much more often probably - cheers on the info about the mats aswell

Will check out what the maxidot offers,

Mind made up, will definitely go for the scout, for the price the stuff you get as standard is impressive enough and most peoples reactions to the car on this site has been favourable

Hi Utarg, I also ended up buying a new scout, as the second hand prices were so close to new. I looked at DTD, but my local dealer (Exeter) came reasonably close, so I went with them in the end. I have the full size spare (no reduction in boot space), and nothing else from the options list (apart from metallic aqua blue paint) as rkenny says, the standard kit is pretty good. I didn't go for the variable boot floor, a good choice having lived with the car for a month or so now. Would highly recommend the Hatchbag boot liner, and the Skoda dog guard (fits well, and very secure). I have to say that a month into ownership, I'm delighted with my Scout diesel - thought it would have a hard job replacing my previous A6 but it's absolutely brilliant!

I've got my Scout second hand at one year old (ex Skoda UK) last August and it had the full size spare wheel already there - I think it's a must have so I would have gone out and got one anyway. I have added the Hatchbag boot liner because we have a big (I mean really big) retriever and I would advise buying the extension bits for the bootliner as well so that the vinyl bumper is covered getting the dog in and out - I forgot once and the dog really scratched the bumper jumping out (anyone got any ideas on how to tackle these deep scratches?) as well as the bit that goes over the rear seats.

I don't listen to radio or music much in the car but I have tried the mp3 player facility but you can't control the player from the dash ( not that I've tried so I stand to be corrected on that), or the steering wheel so its just a matter of setting it to play.

The Scout is excellent in snow and such like but is badly let down (IMO) by the Dunlop tyres fitted as standard - they are OK for general use/goodish roads but if you intend to do any rough stuff or or be out in snowy parts then you'll have to think about more suitable tyres at some point. There some threads on here about suitable winter/all season tyres.

I just got back from towing my caravan on its first outing this year and managed 28mpg compared to 42/43 mpg normally. The Scout seems to be excellent (so far) as a towcar and cruise control is a real boon (especially going through mile after mile of average speed camera roadworks).

All in all I am very satisfied with the Scout - I think it is a great car and there doesn't seem anything in the same price bracket with the same spec. on the market.

We ordered one a few weeks ago, due mid May. we went for the variable boot floor, full sized spare, alcantara trim (comes with heated seats) The steering wheel with radio controls & Xenons.

The one tip I would give is try & see one in the colour you want. The body mouldings completely change the car. I originally wanted Cappachino & it looked OK on the std Octy but on the scout it almost looked grey to me but I agree before the debate starts colour is a very personal thing

Re drive the deal you will be able to find a dealer who gets very close. I got to within £100 & that was with 12 months tax, DTD only offer 6. Ive ended up with a dealer in Kent & I live in Hampshire but I just prefer dealing with a person I can meet & chat with. I chose this dealer mainly due to their attitude when I was researching models & colours, I could probably have found someone closer but it just felt right

what sort of prices are you getting with dtd?

Happy silver Scout owner here in Oz, although they're optioned a little different here (for 7k pounds more than UK prices, admittedly) - 17" alloys, 16" steel spare, heated seats, maxidot, auto dual climate control are all standard. I got the MDI which is great, although the interface is a bit clunky. If you don't need charging you could just go with the Aux input.

Its OK around town, but heaps of fun on rough gravel roads (not that you find too many of those in the UK). I didn't consider the variable floor (standard on the Golf wagon here), as the big rectangular box is great, but wish that I'd got the towbar fitted for carrying bikes....

I ordered a Scout 2.0TDI from DTD a month ago, including metallic paint, spare wheel, MFSW & front parking sensors. Price was £18,155 which included 12 months road tax, the new 'showroom tax' and £75 arrangement fee for 0% finance.

The dealer price (with the 0% VAT offer) was £19268.83, so DTD saved me £1113.83. Actually the dealer did make a counter offer when I showed him the DTD price - he knocked a whopping £100 off the price, so I "only" saved £1013.83 by buying through DTD ;)

Some dealers are keener to compete so if your local wont then shop around

If your local dealer won't deal why waste your time shopping around dealers to get them to match internet prices? Why not just cut to the chase and order through the web.

I phoned the 3 nearest dealers and none were interested in my money (couldn't/wouldn't even get half way to the DTD price).

I didn't bother looking further afield as the next nearest dealer was over an hour's drive away, so I decided I might as well order from DTD (whose dealer is about 2 hours drive away).
