Change from a Fab RS to a Octy RS?..yeah or nay?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all

I have been thinking about changing my motor for a wee while now and have just seen on carzone.ie that you can get a new Octavia RS smokey on a 10 plate for 28k euro!!....they used to go for 40K!! Thing is will i enjoy the Octy after having such kick in the asre performave that i had in the Fab? And whats this about not being able to remapped the new Octys?

The space will be a big bonus as getting hacked off with the tiny boot in the Fab!! And will also solve the very uncomfortable seat problem in the Fab!!

Any views on this ? Should i stay or should i go?!!

Cheers

Kit

I've been looking at swapping my car for a while and obviously considered the Octy. When I test drove one I found it to be a very "grown up" car in comparison the Fabia. Not that's a bad thing. My only real gripe with the Oct was that it's just too big! I don't want/need a car that size. That and you can get a new Mazda 3 2.2d (185) with every option under the sun included for a shade over £17k.

I eco the above it is very grown up compaired to the fabia and it really is alot bigger! You dont so much notice at first until you switch between them and then you realise how big it is.

I was going to go for maybe a golf or audi A3 but I rather like the skoda marque and I've not had any problems with the fabia so I stuck with it.

I made the change from the Fabia VRS to an Octavia VRS recently. I have not regretted it and I dont think the Octy is that big. I had my Fabia for 4 years and it is a brilliant car! But the Octy is so much better in every way, well part from economy, as I got the petrol version :) However I'm still returning 35mpg with a few mods and a remap. So it isnt doing that bad. I would take one for a test drive and see what you think. I knew as soon as I drove it I was buying one!

I have a Fabia VRs and my missus has an Octy Vrs diesel company car.

I drive them about equally and can say the follwoing :-

• The Octy is obviously quicker being 170bhp, but the Fabia pulls harder lower down but runs out of steam earlier whereas the Octy just pulls and pulls right through the rev range.

• The road holding on the Octy is unbelievable on it's 18' wheels (an option when new). It rides very flat in corners and you would have to be at track speeds to break traction on a dry road.

• Brakes are better in the Octy but are a bit fierce as they don't need much pedal pressure to stop very fast.

• Engine is quieter in the Octy (it's the PD one not the newer CR one) but this may be down to the car being bigger or better insulated.

• The Fabia feels somewhat 'rough' after driving the Octy. Ride quality is also much better in the Octy although both are quite hard and don't like out potholed roads too much.

• Boot on the Octy is huge.

• The Fabia is better on the fuel. It's a lot better around town but only about 4-5mpg better on a run. The Octy seems to use proportionally more fuel when driven hard.

• The Fabia has that magic something that just makes you smile and enjoy driving it. Maybe it's because it's smaller and you don't expect it to drive as well as it does.

I love my Fabia to bits but the Octy is the better all-around car. It should be given the price/size difference.

If you change I doubt you will regret it but you may sometimes fondly remember your Fabia.

Thanks for that :) Im still dithering about getting a new one (2010) model or getting a prefacelift second hand one? I know that as soon as i drive it away from the garage i will have lost a shed load of cash with a new one!!

Are there any ongoing niggles with the new and old Octy that i should be aware of? And seeing as i dont do that many miles, which would be the best option...a smokey or a petrol?

Cheers

Kit :)
