Octavia VRS 2.0 Diesel CR - Running In ?

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone !

I'm Allan and just joined the forum recently.

Expecting delivery of new Octy VRS (Anthracite) in the next couple of weeks, current car Ford Focus. (Now 9 years old) Never had car from new before and would appreciate any Advice / Do's Don'ts when running in my new VRS.

I will post some pictures when I get a chance !

modern engines dont really require the same running in period that cars back in the day did, but i would suggest that for the first few thousand miles you drive smoothly, avoid revving the engine too hard, and be kind to the brakes. It might be tempting to leave the dealer with smoke pouring out of the tyres, going sideways, but if you want your car to have the best start in life, feed it breast milk .... oh, um, thats for a different forum :D i meant treat it sympathetically and get it serviced when it's due.

enjoy your new car :)

There is a school of thought that says driving the car reasonably aggressively from new is better. I prefer to drive carefully when new, my car has only done about 350 miles.

Funnily enough i was going to post a topic like this today. I am still 8-10 weeks (possibly) from taking delivery of my CR 170 vRS but i came accross this article for running in a diesel. Would you tend to agree with this? This is the first new car i will have owned and also the first diesel so its all going to be a new experience. When my dad picked up his new Hyundai I30 CDTI nothing was mentioned about running it in and so has been following those guidelines.

That would seem reasonable advice. One thing I would say is I bought my PD VRS as an ex demo. Now I do not believe the advice as posted above would have been followed but I have had no problems with the DPF and the fuel economy is at least on par compared to what other people post. for their cars. So I do not think it did any harm to my engine not following the advice above. That said I am about to get a new CR VRS and I will be a little gentle for the first 1000 miles or so. The manual also gives advice on how to run the engine in.

Have to say that I haven't really bother from reading another thread on here. My previous 2 new 1.9PD's I follwed the procedure and then drunk a lot of oil in the first 10k. I am currently on just under 700miles on my CR and no oil has been used. I wait for the oil temp (note not coolant temo) to get above 80 then give it some beans through the gears. This apparently wears the piston rings in much better leading to a better seal and less burn off of oil and of course better performance.

How do you get the oil temp? Have you added an oil temp dial?

Recent builds include an oil temperature readout (digital) in Maxidot.

I'm with dirty dish cloth on this one, I did post a reply to a thread in the Yeti section about running in "running in - is it needed" I believe it was, I think it on about page 9 of the Yeti forum and basically from day 1 drive the car spiritedly, don't be too gentle with it or you will be carrying a litre of oil in your boot for quite a while.

Ran mine in as per the manual.

5000 miles on, running fine, and I have only put a very small amount of oil in (0.1 litre I guess).

If you have maxi dot then you get oil temp through the cycle of readouts. Thats on my VRS anyway.

I have has several company diesel cars and the last 3 i've given death from the normal delivery mileage. Never put oil in it never had a problem with the DPF or it going into limp mode and they run fine. Others that have run in have had problems so I would be inclined to go with the school of thought that you should drive them hard to get a good bedding in of the rings but then again I won't have to pay if it goes wrong, but with my vrs it's my own car so not sure I will be giving my new vrs "death" from day one of delivery despite what i've just said.

All modern engines have been bench marked when built, this running in thing is a myth. Drove my Vrs hard from day 1 and got it remapped at about 800 miles. Runs like a dream with no issues and doesn't drink oil.

This one always polarises opinion !

For me (mine has 600 miles on the clock); as it is brand new take it easy ...but I can see both sides of the argument.

Whichever you choose..enjoy !
