The Cupra Intake - a Mixed review

Featured Replies

I got my Cupra Intake fitted yesterday (poor cars only got 2,500 miles on it!), there was a noticable increase in performance low down, however up top it actually feels MORE laboured - I havent taken it post !00 mph yet but it didnt like even going that fast.

Also, the economy seems to have shot down - I could get 55mpg with a little work now and a light right foot. Now it seems I can't get better than 47 mpg.

I forgot to mention, I didnt follow the Article on here, meaning I just went gun ho into it and pulled the 2 other pipes out without removing the MAF connector first, will this affect anything, it sits perfect now though.

The great benefit for me was the reduction in smoke ouput. Mine was a bit of a soot machine with remap and exhaust. Even with freeflow filter element - booting it in fourth gave plenty of smoke!

With cupra intake (also modded intake flap) i get much less smoke and also seems to rev more freely - sweeps well into three figure speeds in fourth now with ease.

Any more info on the flap mod, was this what Josh was talking about?

Yes I did the mod a recommended by Josh.

If you dont have the trumpet in the airbox the flow could be too turbulant and hence the poor figures......

Will not disconnecting the MAF thingy have any effect?

nope if you do take it off tho remember to put it back on lol

it all seems to fit ok, im a bit worried about it rubbing & I dont have many miles on the beast so it may improve more once it's bedded in.

And this was my concern, I am speaking to Ross later on today to get some figures but just because you get get the air into the engine quicker doesn't mean to say you can get it out quicker ! I suspect this may play a bigger part on the Chipped Furby's as they run a higher boost pressure. It may come down to you need a better exhaust system to shift the exhaust gases.

I also suspect that turning off the EGR valve is going to cause problems further down the line as well. :thumbdwn:

Just beacuse you have a bigger intake doesnt mean it will injest more air, it just means it can.

But on the other hand what you can do is slow air velocity down which can reduce torque. But to be honest of you look at a remapped car and the Ibiza Cupra they probably aint far off each other with regards to air flow. And if SEAT saw it benifitted the Ibiza by having a larger inlet pipe to the airbox there was probably a good chance that is was causing a restriction of some kind.

A good example would be the recent Anglsey track day you may have heard about ;)

My car and Nick Ps car both have revo. but mine was smoking noticeably less when giving it beans :D (i was faster too, but thats not a fair test ;) )

I have measured a lot of cars on the rolling road. I have seen a lot of VW Passat 100hp TDi's with app. 120-122hp from the factory. I measured my own Fabia last week and it only had 111hp. I have never seen a VW Passat with such a low figure. I also know that the people that helps me test the cars have tested a lot of VW Passat 130hp TDi's and the worst they tested had 142hp and the best had 149hp - tested on a brand new and very precise rolling road. I have even seen a german test where the 130hp TDi had 157hp from factory! But here most of the Fabia RS-drivers have app. the expected 130hp in their cars. As the engine are the same, there should be some other things "wrong". Maybe the air-intake? The airbox in a Fabia is only half the size of the airbox in a Golf IV/Octavia/Leon and so on. So maybe this explains if the Cupra-tricks works? BTW: I have newer seen a tuned VW Passat 130hp with less than 170hp, but I tested a Seat Ibiza 130hp with box and it only had 163hp. This week we will fit the Cupra-intake to the Ibiza and test it again.

Passat also has a different exhaust and turbo outlet aswell which helps.

Will not disconnecting the MAF thingy have any effect?

It was only disconnected to make the cupra pipe easier to fit (It was refitted after). It's down to the individual whether they bother to take it off at all.

Just thought i'd share my views on the intake after a week or driving to work and back. Impressions in general are a slight improvement & the top end has loosened up now after I refitted it.

One problem I seem to be having is that the angle the tube connects into the bumper end part on seems to leave a 5mm gap and doesn't look like it's sitting fully flush. I know this doesnt sound anything major, but after a week of driving the tube seems to have loosened off the bumper end part by a cm or more which is quite noticable, especially when it doesnt sit flush.

With a quick push it's all back to how it was, but it keeps going like this each time.

Is this affecting the air flow going into the engine, I was considering using some black ductape to hold the 2 parts together or glueing it down, however it's probably doing nothing in terms of affecting performance but it does annoy me slightly and play on my mind.

Chris.

Fully understand that, everything little niggle I have with my car plays on my mind
