Memory question..

Featured Replies

Hi to All

Looking to revitalise an old laptop by adding some memory. It needs SO DIMM PC2700, but would it be OK to run faster memory (say PC5300) in it at the lower speed?

Chris

Yes. It'll just run at the lowest speed of whatever Is in there.

Cool, thanks for the speedy reply.

As long as both are the same memory type, eg DDR, DDR2 or DDR3 and your machine supports that memory type, then you will be fine with faster memory.

I'm fairly certain however that PC500 and PC2700 are different memory types. DDR2 vs DDR and so won't work.

If you go to:

Then look for memory upgrade or memory advisor, it will be able to find the right memory for your laptop.

It looks like this kit would do to replace everything and give you a matched 4GB (2*2GB sets)

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT2KIT25672Y335

It is however a bit expensive, so if you have 1/2GB in there anyway, you could just add another single DIMM to give you 3/4GB total.

Can be worth getting the memory type from Crucial then buying the it on ebuyer. Sometimes you'll get a good deal on Kingston or Corsair memory. They have lifetime warranties like Crucial.

TBH I've used Ebuyer's Extra Value memory without problems but only in other people's computers.

Watchout for the amount of pins (contacts) as some might be 200 pins, whereas some maybe 144 pins.

The little notch (cutout) in the memory board maybe in a slightly different place, to stop the fitment of another memory board.

As said -yes - it'll run at slowest - bonus is that the newer stuff is usually cheaper . Don't forget that you need laptop size - so again as said -same pin size . One place to look might be computer fairs .Try a google for your area .Might cost a couple of quid to get in ,but the prices are lower .

Thanks for the replies all. I am well aware of the different types and configurations of memory, was just not 100% sure it would just run downspeed. I have always steered clear of laptops as I dont like them, but this one needs a gig to smooth things out. It is just my old work one, so gets used for email, MS word, Excel while I am away working.

Chris

My old A60 Toshiba laptop had one memory card soldered as a permanent fixture , whereas the other memory card could be removed which could be upgraded, to 1GB
