Question for all vRS owners

Featured Replies

on my regular drive to the g/f's house i go on the M6 and their is a section which is a downhill gradient where in my old Clio i used to be able to pretty much let off throttle at the top and coast down to the exit slip road on overrun, therefore using no fuel for a good 500m+

ive had the Fabia for ~18 months now and if i let off throttle in this, then i slow down too quickly to be keeping pace with traffic and i end up back on the throttle again, im in 6th gear btw

ive just come home a different way and along a 40 road with a fairly steep downhill gradient, in 5th, i pretty much just kept a stable speed rather than gaining any momentum, if anything i was very very slowly losing speed

im wondering whether this is because of how the 6spd box in my vRS is geared, or whether my rear brakes are binding slightly

my car is a late Feb 2004 '53 plate with the ASZ engine

Some car gearboxes slow the car down more then others - my vRS certainly slows up more then my old 2.0l with a 5 speed box (when in gear). The solution? Try popping her into neutral or dipping the clutch when coasting and see if that helps.

yup but both of those solutions use fuel, letting off the throttle in gear doesnt use any

My vRS is a 54 plate. There are a couple of fairly steep hills on my route to and from work - coasting down them (in 6th) the car will pick up speed. Not a huge amount, but it certainly does gain a bit.

Hill near me slows me down anything below 4th. 5and 6th speeds me up a little. Id say its the gearbox.

its the engine giving you engine braking.... my (1.9 m/jet diesel) fiat gives way more engine braking than swmbo's honda civic (1.6 petrol) its simply that the bigger heaver diesel has more engine braking..... mine still does 50 +mpg and hers does 35 though! lol......

Yup! In my 1.4 16v Fabia did most engine braking using 2nd..... If I tried that in the vRS in the same conditions I'd hit the windscreen.. have moved up to 3rd for the same effect now, just wish the vRS's brake pedal light switch was as sensitive as the Elegances so I could pop the brake lights on with out actually using any notable brakes, like I could in the 1.4.

Isn't coasting out of gear also illegal?

after further testing im certain its the gearing on the box and my brakes are ok
