oil for 2.0 PD disel

Featured Replies

This is a bit of a numpty question, as I realise I should be able to sort this through a search but my defense is that there’s almost too much advice on oil types - to the point that I’d like to double check which oil I should be putting in my car.

It’s a 2006 2.0 litre TDI PD 140 bhp diesel, 60k mileage. Don’t think it’s got the partial filter (no 7GG on the code details)

It’s currently on n variable servicing; although I now intend to switch it to fixed

Just spent an hour in the motor shops and got bamboozled with 505’s 502’s; not to mention the ones with the .01 extension. Hope you can help with a precise advice as the manual is far from clear on this.

Have seen this thread which seems to suggest that 507 is a good catch-all solution.

If you are on variable, then go for 507 00.

That's what I put in mine.

Thanks, for the prompt advise, but would want to check a little further - I notice that your's is a DSG varient, and wondered whether 507 ( and straight; without any .01 extentions) is the right one for my 6 speed?

mark - are you getting confused between engine oil and gearbox oil?

the dsg/manual box makes no difference to the engine oil required for variable servicing.

No, it’s just a measure of my confusion over the range of oil options for the VAG diesel engines. Particle filter; or not: variable service or not, as examples. Just wondered whether the DSG gearbox was a further oil type derivative.

It’s definitely for the engine

no worries, can see where your general confusion lies.

didn't mean to make out like you were clueless with respect to motor engineering......which ironically, I generally am. :)

VW 507.00 is safe for all diesels with or without a DPF, and on fixed or variable servicing with a few exceptions which require VW506.1 oil or a VW505.1 oil.

For the Octy II 2.0 PD you can use VW507 without a worry as this is suitable.

If your car does have a DPF you *must* use this oil (VW507) regardless of your service type.

if your car does not have a DPF, then you may use this oil or VW506.1 for variable services and I think (but would check) VW505.1 for fixed interval services.

Thanks for this helpful guidance. I’m going to play safe and go for the 507, but out of interest is it normal for most UK spec’ed Octy’s NOT to have the DPF?

Hi,

I use the 507.00 oil in my 2.0tdi pd Octavia, Mobil 1 I think, top up bottle in car so no problem there. Currently the DPF seems to be a fitment on the vRS diesel and the new 1.6 TDI CR( common rail) the new type of diesel injection system VW is introducing to all the cars across it's range. Yours as the TDI 140 will be the older PD version like mine so will not have the DPF fitted. The TDI 140 CR will started to be fitted in the Octavia later on this year I believe.

ASDA had, and may still have for all I know, the Mobil Oil (507 VAG compatible) for £32 for 5 litres a couple of weeks ago. So I got some for my Scout 20 Tdi PD.

I think the Scout is the only 2.0Tdi PD 140 with the DPF, the rest of the 140's use the DOHC 16v version without DPF. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me.

Went into ASDA today, Mobil ESP5/30 507.00spec still £32.00 for 5ltr.

As ever, I’m grateful for the advice provided via this site. For those who may maybe interested, Asda (Ellesmere Port) had plenty of 5L Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W-30 oil on its shelves at £32.

Which leaves me with a final question. I intent to move over to fix service intervals, for which the manual makes a distinct recomendation for the 507.01 derivative, rather than 507.00 for the variable. The reason I’m asking this as the small print on the Mobil info makes a clear statement that the oil is “for all VW engines with the exception of PD TDI’s without longlife service”

I ask, because I haven’t seen the 507.01, as recommended in the manual for diesels on fixed servicing.
