Running a 1.9PD TDI to 100k/5 years old - what costs/suprises to expect

Featured Replies

As people with Mk I's tend to have higher mileage PD's than those with Mk II's i thought i would post i here.

My current PCP deal expires in October so i am starting to look into the costs associated with changing/keeping the car. After running this one for what will be 2 years i am pretty sure of running costs/servicing needs etc for the first two years of ownership, which just leaves me to calculate purchase price and finance options if i was to get another new car. I am also looking into buying the car from Skoda when the deal expires so was looking for your advice and experience of what running costs to expect if i kept the car for another 3 years, as i do 18k-20k a year and maybe doing increased mileage with my job this is beginning to look like the sensible option as i wont be stung for excess mileage charges if i were to get another PCP (though they arent huge).

I have an idea of fuel costs, tyre life/costs, taxing, insurance etc. Servicing is costing ~£100 for a 10/30/50k and ~£200 for a 20/40/60k service. So basically if i kept the car to 100k miles what costs would i expect (the car will have about 38k when my deal expires in Oct), which services are the biggies (is it 80k for cambelt, water pump? How much?), do the glow plugs or injectors need replacing etc, basically what tends to go wrong/need replacing when taking the engine to this age? I know that these engines when well looked after will just be running in at 100k so i dont expect anything major to break, but an idea of servicing and wear part costs would be appreciated.

Also, as the Mk I/II are pretty much the same car underneath how long do brake/suspension parts seem to last and cost to replace for you guys? My previous Mk I starting falling apart badly at 80k/9years old with supension collapsing, handbrake snapping, coolant system going, knackered suspension bushes to name a few (though that car wasnt particuarly well loved apart from regular lube services i admit).

Apologies if some of this seems obvious, but please humour me. Thanks all for your help in advance.

Usually 60,000 miles / 4 years for cambelt, and is usually around £400 done at a dealership.

I would not expect any other major costs during 100,000 miles of ownership to be honest.

Approximates I could be wrong from what I have read up on so far common maintenance items:

All depends on driving style and mileage to be honest, if driven sensibly the wearable items will last abit longer:

Cambelt done from Dealership at approx £400 includes, timing belt, water pump and tensioners etc

Brake Discs and pads: £200

Clutch with Flywheel replacment - £350

Anti-roll bar links fitted £100

Bushes - Approx £200

Glow Plugs - £60

Odd sensors failing common VAG Flaw - £100

Turbo Failure Flaw- £400-500 Labour another £200

Oil changes, including filters and so on another few hundred over 5 years approx £400-500

Other repairs: £200

Injectors do not usually need replacing unless they fail

Always works out cheaper to keep a car for a few years comparing to buying a new one as the resale value is always reduced drastically

Should see 100K+ no problems other than wear and tear items if serviced properly on schedule. Very strong engine if correct 505.01 oil used. Wrong oil can cause camshaft problems. If an injector does fail, £600 each to replace.

Althoug if it is run on the longlife stuff but serviced every year as VAG now state the car will be fine, infact its a better product.

My 1.9TDI ( 2005 ) will be paid for in July and I am thinking the same thing, either keep the car or get a newer car. I got a new cambelt and water pump fitted last year and fitted four new tires in November, the car passed it's MOT last month without any faults found. I only do about 6000 miles a year so the engine is hardly run in ( 38000 ) and the only problem i am aware of is the alloys are starting to rust. If I do get a new Fabia it will be the newer models which are coming out this month so will wait at least 18 months so I can get a use car,my car is a Elegance so it as all the toys I need. After the final loan payment this will help me save up for a new car plus pay unexpected bills with the car, I have a Warranty Direct policy in case large bills come up this cost me about £280 with the best plan which includes the turbo.

Thanks for the help guys, as i assumed no major issues, just good to check i suppose.

My little Fabia 100PD is now on 191k miles

So about double of what you have

No major issues so far

In fact she is still on the origional clutch she came with from the factory

I got her when she had 41k on the clock

She was mapped at approx 90k too :D

141BHP now too

How much did the mapping cost you?.

How much did the mapping cost you?.

To be fair , not alot , but it is because I had it done here

But £299 inclusive of VAT and rolling road printout afterwards is what it costs now

Mind , then we was selling it ' £375 + VAT

So still very cheap

Sarah

I gained approx 8MPG after the remap too B)
