Leaving car "stood" for a few months- any advice.

Featured Replies

I've parked up my wife's petrol car for a few months,on the drive and put a S.O.R.N. on it.

My question is should I start it up every couple of weeks and let it warm up to charge the battery or put a trickle charger to the battery and keep it topped up this way?

A friend says starting the car up every couple of weeks won't do the exhaust any good.

Any advice appreciated.

I'd recommend taking the weight off the tyres unless you plan to give it a run around.....

I would personally just disconnect the battery and leave it. Should start up OK once you reconnect it.

make sure its the right way up!?

I've left mine for 6 months before. I just put an extra 15psi in the tyres and left it with the handbrake off. Battery was flat of course after 6 months but once charged it started fine and gave no problems after that.

Don't start it up for 10mins to warm it through then shut it off. It does more damage than good

If it's going to be sitting for a good while then maybe worth getting a big tub of grease and coating the extremities.

what do they do when you buy a new car from the production line? it is something like tyre pressure being increased

Thanks everyone,I have decided to take off the battery and trickle charge it for 15 mins everyday.

I will then keep checking it with a voltmeter.

You may find the brake discs will corrode quite badly if left uncovered.

why not just take the battery out completely and leave it in the shed??

it will be alright ;)

saves arsing around with a charger

B) I notice with VAGCOM there is a 'transport mode' which puts the car into sleep mode and its in this state when leaving the factory, it shuts down some systems to save power and can be switched on or off, but it does say something about a 'low oddometer reading' its in section 25-a. cheers - Stuart.

Disconnect battery leads

Leave handbrake down this prevents the calipers from sticking/seizing on to the pads leave it in gear so it does not roll or put a brick behind the wheels
