Smoke

Featured Replies

Had my Fabia remapped today. Stage 1 map so about 170bhp/290lb/ft. I have the P160 intake and Pipercross panel filter. There is some extra smoke when booting it which I expected but not drastic amounts. However in 6th flat out (private road :D) it's like my own personal smokescreen. Obviously this is due to over fuelling.

Now the interesting bit. I've heard cutting a 2" square hole in the bottom of the airbox (pre filter side) will reduce smoke. Has anybody heard of this or has anybody done it? Not too bothered about the smoke because it's rare I will be flat out in 6th much but was just wondering if trying to get some extra air in there would help.

not heard of that but have you thought of a cold air intake/induction kit instead? and do away with the airbox completely.

To the OP, who has done the remap and which companys map is it, if thats different from who did it?.

Not all maps are created equal and some are better than others.

It's a company called PD Tuning in Boldon. It's a custom map of theirs created using their Dyno Dynamics RR. I know all maps differ and some will smoke where others don't and I'm not too bothered about the smoke as it's only really when I fully boot it I get the smoke. I was just wondering if anybody has heard of this airbox mod or if it's a myth.

I've not got much of my airbox left but wouldn't say it reduces smoke that much if you've got PD160 intake.

Chances are its your intake temps rocketing in high gears..

The poor little side mount intercooler does struggle...

Ah yes I didn't think of intake temps. The smoke is as expected through the gears (i.e. Slightly more than standard) it's only when a constant high load is applied then I become a red arrow.

So maybe I should look at the arch mod to get more air to the intercooler until I can afford a proper FMIC?

Just to confirm, cutting a hole in the bottom of the airbox will do no harm, but may not help much?

Thats right.. Wont do any harm, half of my bottom airbox is missing, got a bit happy with the dremel :)

I'm still on standard intercooler, but removed fog lights and cut out the wheel arch.
