Turbo Warranty

Featured Replies

Lets see what the opinions are :)

I popped my old turbo, stuck a brand new GNT1749VB on and returned the car to standard, as soon as I started driving it there was a noise similar to that of a kazoo being blown when the car came on full boost,

I double checked everything, gaskets, resealed the full boost system and pinpointed the turbo unit, the turbo was then stripped off and a chipped Exhaust blade was found, Turbo duly returned to the retailer who has returned to the manufacturer for a report.

The initial grumblings are that it wont be a warranty claim as "a bit of carbon may have hit the blade" my thoughts are that the unit has circa 1000 miles on it and should be treated as a manufacturing defect.

Like I say I'm just pre-empting the letter from Garrett but what are the thoughts on the way this will go?

Warranty for sure. A bit of carbon chipping a blade, absolute tosh.

That's what I thought too.

Garrett are very good when it comes to this kind of thing. I don't expect you will have any problem.

Garrett can kindly get to f**k, and honour their warranty for a MANUFACTURING defect! :D

Am I missing something here, or just being silly - but could it not be a piece of the old turbo that has caused the damage? I know when I had a replacement on mine, my Indy mechanic spent ages cleaning all the pipes, intercooler etc to make sure that no foreign objects were left in there.

For that to happen with the exhaust wheel, you'd need to chip the intake wheel, and that chip to get down, through the intercooler, back up into the engine, and back out the engine again, without damaging the valves, piston, or combustion chamber roof en route I think.

Fair point! Me being silly :giggle:
