Fuse blow out!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

Just bought a 2001 Fabia tdi and have encountered my first problem. Switched the AC on today and turned the fan on full blast to cool the car down. After a few mins the fan cut out completely and wouldn't come back on. I just took the end panel off the dash to check the fuses and noticed that the slot for the heater fan fuse has completely melted and the fuse has disappeared :o There is just a hole left and I can't put a new fuse in there because it has distorted from the heat!

My initial thought is that someone has perhaps put an incorrect fuse in this slot in the past. Regardless, I now need to sort this out. There is a vacant slot directly above. How hard is it to access the back of the fuse box? Is it easy enough to disconnect the wires for the heater fan fuse and solder them into the slot above? Is this the best thing to do?

Here is a photo to show the damage http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff100/AJ20vt/IMG_2465.jpg

Any help greatly appreciated!

Someones had a fuse that was rated too high in there. You really need to consult an auto electrician as the reason for excess current will have to be sorted first. Auto spark can remove fuse box and wire the spare location to take the blown fuse slot. Fuse box is a bit of a Chinese puzzle to get out.

ok thanks for the reply. Sounds like it's probably best to consult an expert rather than have a crack at it myself with a soldering iron

Can anyone recommend an auto electrician or decent mechanic in the Cambridge area that might be able to sort this out? I know there is a main dealer here but I'd rather not use them if possible - previous experiences with dealers have always been bad.
