Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T(163bhp)

Featured Replies

hi all,

what opinions and views to you all have on the audi? seen a 2nd hand one for a decent price.

what diiference is there in the 163bhp engine compared with the 150bhp(apart from the 13 odd bhp :D )

does anyone know what the quattro drivetrain can handle power wise?

thanks all

the old quattro sport had about 450bhp so that should be enough

I liked the a4 and was looking at a used quattro avant until I worked out how much company car tax it would cost me due to the higher list price - that helped me to decide I wanted a vRS

the 4x4 sytem is much better than the one in the skoda's as it doesn't use a haldex but instead uses the torsen link which a mechanical device which detects torque rather than detect slip electronically then react to it, might be the same torsen they fit to the s4/rs4, ross might be able to help on this one

Yup drive line is nearly the same as the S4/RS4, pretty much bomb proof. Leaky diff seals are quite common but thats about it on the 1.8T.

What shape is it? Older ones were 180 bhp for a Quattro, newer shape A4's they did drop the power due to emission regs.

Very nice cars though, would love a 1.8T Quattro Avant Sport, they come with nice trim and 17" alloys.

its 2 years old, its the 163bhp model, not too sure of the spec, so they 4wd would handle remap etc easily? maybe even a turbo upgrade?

Ahh ok then its the newer shaped A4, yeah they map good, cant quote figures but your normal tuner will be able to help, i know AmD have done a fair few of them.

Milltek to an exhaust and sports cat again available through AmD and other outlets.

My dad has got a 54 plate A4 S-Line in Missano red, its rather nice.

any idea what they changed when they made them 163bhp instead of 150bhp and why?

Its not really a change from 150 to 163, its a detune from 180 which is what the quattros normally run to compensate for the driveline drag. It was detuned due to EURO 4 emission regs.

But basically its a different map as far as I know. Possibly a KO3s is fitted on the 163 but to be perfectly honest I dont know. My dads S -line is one of the new 190 bhp twin intercooled 1.8T's and its pretty quick, mapped they get up to 250 bhp with an exhaust!

cheers, ill keep my eye out, i fancy a 4wd, just feel 200bhp thru front wheels is too much. just personal taste i guess

the 4x4 system is much better than the one in the skoda's as it doesn't use a haldex but instead uses the torsen link which a mechanical device which detects torque rather than detect slip electronically then react to it.

That's how I understood it as well Bengie - the A4 quattros drivetrains I had felt solid and very safe - definitely better than the haldex I had on my Octavia.

Once had to drive out of a packed snow/sheet ice car park and everything in the system was clearly locked up to the max - the steering loaded up massively as torque was shuffled around, wheels were braked and diffs were tightened. A very very impressive system.

if they did a powerful tdi engine with torsen and sport trim id have one....

if i had the money :o

errrrr.........................how about a 2.5v6TDI quattro???

dunno what they chip to but i bet they are quite torquey(not that place in devon-land)

2.5 V6's dont chip aswell as PD engines. Very noisy aswell I find.

I had a V6 Tdi Quattro from 2000-2002 (150bhp chipped to 185'ish) which then became 180bhp with the new model. I'd come from a 1.9Tdi Quattro (110bhp chipped to c.135bhp) and it pulled better from below 2000 rpm than the V6 did.

As mentioned above, the quattro system was great - if you dropped the clutch at 4000rpm and changed gear quickly, I regularly timed 0-60 at 7.5 seconds (corrected for speedo error etc)

I didn't find the V6 noisier - more of just a different kind of noise and it was fairly sweet if you held it on the throttle (did had a different backbox though). Sold it for an Impreza for a year as my job was paying for the fuel ;)

I'd be happy to get the 130 pd Quattro and get the same results as the Fabia vRS owners are!

looks like the A4 might be going top of my shopping list for next. all depends on money mind you.

really fancy a 4wd with a bit of power

I had the 150 bhp on on R plate and the 163bhp quattro sport on a 51 plate.Beautiful car the quattro but it certainly needed the latest boost to 190.bhp.just seemed slightly underpowered. You certainly felt secure but seemed to get through an awful lot of petrol! maybe it was just my heavy foot. Hope this helps (

Torsens *are* more thirsty than haldex's tho.... and heavier I think.

I drove an Allroad 2.5V6tdi, have to say it was very well balanced for a big bus and very nice to drive... if only they were not so damn expensive!!

Beg to differ young Ian

Are we talking Torsen beam as in 2 wheel drive.

No, that would be a torsion beam, muppet...

The torsen 4wd will be more thirsty as its driving all four wheels more often than a Haldex system.

More often... ie all the time, is always engaged.
