Off Road - tentatively

Featured Replies

Yesterday, being a day off, and the sun shining, I thought I'd venture off road. Just above Builth Wells there are a few areas of common land inhabited only by sheep and in certain places, the Army. There are one or two green lanes marked on the Ordnance Survey maps of the area, so I reckoned "why not?'.

One of the hilltops is an area I am familiar with having traversed it in a VW Toerag. The Yeti coped with it very well and I was aware of the various systems cutting in and out as we made it over small ditches and through boggy areas. None of it was extreme, but considering that I had managed to get a Renault Laguna 2.2dCi stuck there, it was a step forward indeed.

Anyone else tried off-roading?

I'm off to find a field right now :giggle:

Nope, still waiting for delivery. Did you use the off-road button or do in "normal" drive mode?

I used mine in the snow last winter and it worked a treat

Don't anybody say those immortal words!!!.... :giggle:

with or without snow chains?

I've used the hill descent feature to see what that did but how did the other systems show themselves?

I've never had a 4 x 4 anything and wondered how one would know.

Yep I sure did press the button! And found that the car developed a mind of its own - well not quite, though it certainly influenced decision making.

The downhill control is interesting, in neutral, with throttle control too!! I guess I need to go back and do it all again and make notes and record the engine sounds.

It all felt very safe and secure - hills up and down and sideways, really boggy bits, and some pretty muddy bits too were all covered with ease.

One of the best bits was the ability to cross some very deep ruts without seeming to bottom out or scrape anything.

Perhaps, after we have done the Adventure round the dam that Llanigraham is organising, we ought to meet up above Builth and have a go!

You haven't seen where else I could take you!! :D

Then - lead on Macduff, as the Bard had it!!

Thought this adventure was supposed to be a gentle country drive, not route finding for the next Welsh Rally

Best get the crampons out again :giggle:

It will be!!

It will be!!

I wonder when Warn will be releasing a winch bumper or Safety Devices releasing a rollcage for the Yeti? Can you get Diamondbacks that fit 17" rims???!?!?

Would be funny to see an off-road pimped Yeti like the early days when someone put a freelander body on a bobtailed Range Rover chassis.

LOL

We're running a couple of off-road training days for our members over the next weeks using an RAF off-road course so if I am feeling brave I will take the Yeti along to play on the baby slopes and see what it can do. I don't think I'll be taking it where we take the Land Rovers - they usually come back with at least one broken. I'll let you know how I get on but it will be nice to get its paws muddy.

I don't think the yeti would be too happy in this situation;

There are some nice green-lanes near me over the border in Leicestershire that I want to play on with the yeti once I have walked them on foot. Will post some photos when I get chance.

Yikes - help ma Bob

My pristine Aqua blue YETI wouldn't be able to breathe on/in there.

And if i couyld work out how to post pics I'd show you how GENTLE the bogs and bumps that I traversed were. Lots of wibbling and wobbling and hanging on real tight to everything, but a (small) sense of achievement.

It's been raining these past 2 days here on the Epynt, so tomorrow, I will march out, fire him up, take the camera and the tripod and see if I can catch me a few photos of an intrepid YETI driver being, er, intrepid (with a change of clothes and bumphugs in the boot).
