Engine shake and Exhaust making noise - VIDEO

Featured Replies

Hiya Guys

I have an 07 MKII Octavia VRS. This morning I noticed that whilst Idle the engine shake was more than usual. When I arrived at my work car park I got out and had a listen and a kind of coughing noise is coming from the exhaust every second or so. Whilst moving the car seems fine and the turbo seems fine.

Any Ideas???

Im really hoping this doesn't cost much to fix.

No one?? :(

It might be worth scanning your engine for fault codes.

Cool thanks, I will try find somewhere near Southampton that would do this for free. The local garage want 70 odd quid just to look at the damn thing :(

Check the Vag-com register on this site and you could try contacting a member near you? Rather than paying over the odds for a few minuntes work.

Thanks mate, Where is the register located?

It is located here for you.

Hi Guys

Abit more info

When I first start the engine it idles at about 10'000 after about 30 secs/1min it dips abit and start making the noise from the exhaust.

I have done a quick video here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1Eh5oHz6Vg

Thoughts anyone?

To me that sounds like it is misfiring. Probably a coilpack that has gone? Either way, if you get it scanned. It should bring up a fault code and tell you exactly what it is.

You have a vRS that rev's to 10000 RPM :o :o Wish mine did :giggle: :giggle:

Seriously though that sound isn't normal. It does sound like it's misfiring but if a coil pack had gone i would expect the CEL to be on. Also it could be a hole in the intake system somewhere.

The only way your gonna find out with that is to hook up to VCDS. If you fancy a trip to folkestone i can look at it for you.

Also, Is it safe to drive it to the garage on Thursday?

if there is anyone with a shark performance STS around southhampton they will be able to plug it into your car and read fault codes

Mate mine was doing exactly the same thing, my local dealers run a diagnostic which showed multiple faults (it was only 15 quid though) my local mechanic did the same and it showed a fault with the intake system. Bad news was, he couldn't identify the source of the problem  good news, when I slung on an Evoms intake it cured it

Just take it easy.

My bet is on the air intake system. You would know if it was misfiring as it would be a pig to drive on 3 cylinders ( I know I did for a good 120miles whenmy coil pack went)

This is starting to sound expensive to fix :(

If I pop the bonnet are there any visible signs to look for to see if it is the intake system?

The annoying thing is the warranty only ran out a month ago.

Most probably a coil pack, and I wouldn't drive it as the unburnt fuel can cause havoc with the catalyst.

Having said that, you say it drives fine. You should notice a coil pack failure as it would drive like a dog with hardly any power.

I'm sure I had just said that Ben :p

The only thing I can suggest is to remove the engine cover and make sure there is no cracks in the pipe that runs to the turbo etc.

I don't know of a coilpack going that hasn't thrown up the CEL as 3 cylinders only working is a major problem.

Also a coilpack is only about £32 each and you could replace it yourself in 10mins.

I've seen coilpacks on fire with no CEL mate emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Roger that i stand corrected then :p

Carl

Stupid suggestion possibly

but as I assume it is a petrol engine with the talk of coil packs, is there any point in checking for spark at all plugs and making sure one plug is not faulty?

No, but if he had looked at the register I have HEX+CAN VCDS in the area and would have been willing to scan for him.

FWIW I saw a TT with no logged faults, but coils that would induce an occasional misfire.

Damn to late :(

UPDATE : Winchester Motor Company run a scan, Multiple faults showing but cannot find the problem yet. Already on over an hour diagnostic costs!!

I suppose it is the 13th so bad news is on the way.

As I said previously, mine did exactly the same! A diagnostic run by Skoda showed 19 faults which they couldn't interpret, when my mechanic looked at it (by the way he isn't a complete retard!), he said all the codes pointed to a problem with the intake system.

If you know how to remove the engine cover I would try that as an experiment, when I removed mine it cured the problem so my guess was a pinched hose or something similar. Now I have added a new intake the engine cover has been replaced and the problem has gone.

By the way have any warning lights come on yet?

It's in the garage at the moment. They have tried all the obvious fixes but nothing has worked. They reckon mine was a problem with the pressure valve or something along those lines. Part should be in tomorrow so will see.
