where on earth are the relays?

Featured Replies

Hi

i have a 1.9 tdi comfort, the eml has come on a few times over the last few months but by the time i get the vag-com on it the light has gone off and no codes but i managed to get the vag-com on tonight and get the codes read and got

17932 - Fuel Pump Relay (J17): Open or Short to Ground

P1524 - 35-00 - -

now question is, is this likely to be the relay and if so where on earth is it or is it going to be something else.

apart from the light going on i have no other symptoms apart from when the car is first starts the lights are dim for a very short time then i hear a click and they get brighter, also during the cold spell the wipers woudln't work straight off in the morning some times but a few 100 yards and a click later the were back to normal.

cheers

Tom

99% sure it will be in amongst all the control boxes under/behind the steering wheel / dash area. Going to be a pain to get to though - Wil need to remove the lower dash below the steering wheel and then I am not sure which relay it will be.

This might help - This "number 11" is a likely culprit but don't take my highlighted part number to be gospel. :)

The secondary symptoms about dim lights and the wipers not working in the cold until after the engine has been on for a little while would suggest to me a failing battery too. Might be worth getting this checked out - I'm sure the usual fast fit places would do a battery check for free and trying this in the first instance would save messing with your dash.

cheers for the replys, I know the battery is only 3 years old and it's a heavy duty one, it's been doing it for a while, but i'll get it checked anyway just to be sure. why on earth would they put the relays in such a dumb place, I think that part of the dash is only held on with 3 or 4 screws so i'll try and check under tonight if i get time. haynes was no help at all and niether was the users manual they just wouldn't tell me where the relays are.

cheers

Tom
