I've recently taken delivery of an Octavia 1.6 TDI CR S and I love it.

Thing is, because I was too tight to spend money on extras like a computer that can tell me the MPG, I've done my first tank and worked it out the old fashioned way. I got 47.9mpg on 450 miles of urban driving with about 50 miles of A-road runs out of the city.

I then went to the Skoda website to see what MPG figures they quote, and that is where my question comes from. The MPG figures for the 1.6 TDI CR DPF are very different to the 1.6 TDI CR DSG. Consulting my V5 I worked out that mine is the DPF because the CO2 emissions figures match, the DSG emissions being slightly higher.

When I was buying the car and had decided on the 1.6 TDI and the S model, I don't remember DPF or DSG being mentioned at all as a choice by the salesman.

What is the real difference, in layman's terms, between the two? I'm intrigued to know.

DPF means "Diesel Particulate Filter" and DSG means "Direct Shift Gearbox".

DSG is the Automatic gearbox option, both cars have DPF (filters) fitted.

Unfortunately it's a bit of bad categorisation as both of them should have DPF listed, if one of them has.

DPF is a Diesel Particulate Filter - that is it cleans up the exhaust from the diesel engine. However if you mainly drive for short distances and slowish speeds it doesn't get hot enough to work, and so can be a liability.

DSG is an electronic automatic gearbox that guesses which gear you will be using next and has it ready to engage for you when required.

DSG is different (better) than traditional automatic transmission.

Simply because an automatic car car does not have a clutch where as a car with DSG does, in fact it has 2 (you just don't operate them)!

Thanks for the info on DSG. I should have realised there was a good reason they didn't just put 'automatic'. If I'd learned a bit more about the DSG before choosing I think I'd have been tempted.
