white/grey smoke on starting from cold

Featured Replies

Hi,

Only second time on this forum but had a lot of good help for a previous problem.

Anyhoo We have fabia on a 52 plate 1.4 16v. Its only done 25k, been serviced regularly and has been trouble free till recently. It's had both the coils and the EGR replaced and the battery. We did not use for a week after the battery was replaced but when I went to start it great clouds of white/gray smoke came out. Gave it a run for 20 miles and the smoke was no more. unfortunatley it is smoking regularly now on cold start up (disappears after a min. or so of driving). Sometimes the engine is a very rough on start up. Have no idea what is going on..can any one help..I don't want to make our local skoda garage any more richer.

thanks

PS I always use 98 ron fuel

My first thought was glow plugs, but since it's a petrol, that's clearly wrong. ;)

Anyway, what does the smoke smell of? Is there any sort of water or oil residue on the road under the tailpipe or on the back bumper? Have you looked in the rocker cover for mayonaise (looks like you'd expect from the name), and/or for signs of oil in the coolant?

could they have put the wrong oil in it?

Might just be normal exhaust condensation, especially if it's clearing after a few minutes. Other candidates would be leaky head gasket, or faulty servo. Check coolant and brake fluid levels regularly to see if either are going down.

What is the engine type code, if its BBY then it should be okay, if its A?? then it could be bore wear/ring issues.

Sorry to hear of the issues. I'd have thought that white/grey smoke would be related to running rich or water as oil smoke is normally blue. Maybe you can get someone to stand behind and smell the smoke when you start, oil smoke obviously has a characteristic smell. I don't see how it could be related to the battery/coil work, although I wonder if it could be a sign of a mistake with the EGR repair. I would suspect that it is the AUB engine code the same as mine so I would be concerned about the health of the piston rings. As above, check the oil filler cap and oil dip stick for mayonnaise, check for oil/combustion smells in the coolant expansion tank and maybe check the spark plugs for an oily residue. Failing that, get it to an independent VW specialist so that they can monitor the sensor readings on the computer to see how the engine is running. Good luck.
