MOT Passed Today - 1 Advisory!

Featured Replies

Right boys and girls, the Shifty Mobile went in for it's MOT today. Passed but with one advisory. :smirk:

Who will be the first member to guess what the advisory was?

excessive smoke or wishbone bushes?

Has to be smoke/emissions in that thing B)

2 Minutes. Not bad fella. Advisory was:

*Engine smokes but passed the diesel smoke test*

It's a good job I know the lads at the garage. ;)

He laughed his b*ll*cks off when he was giving me the test sheet and said it filled the workshop with smoke when they gave it full throttle!

2 options - Remap to turn down power/fuel or refit methanol injection kit (that Grumpy broke) to give a cleaner burn.

I would have said "exceeds gross weight due to all the discarded Greggs bags thrown in the boot ".......... :giggle:

Shut it Goldfinger. :punch:

just dont rev it as hard when the emissons machine wants you to depress accelarator, just push a little thats what i did

filled the workshop with smoke when they gave it full throttle!

I didnt know they were allowed to do that anymore!!! Every test centre I have been to dont even bother checking emmisions for any diesel cars I have put throu..... ???

Im sure my mot man said it was only tested when idling?

Matt

I've had mine for 9 months or so and I was worried that

mine was a bit smokier than it should be...

I found out 2 nights ago that a former owner has remapped it.

Who did it, when and where are all burning questions for me but this

thread has got me thinking... What's actually involved in the smoke test?

I passed an mot earlier in the year but what are the limits? Also I'm sure I read somewhere the full

throttle smoke test was discretionary rather than obligatory ...

Oh well, at least the bonus secret remap explains the extra smoke

Then they are all breaking the law. It a legal requirment of any MOT test.

See below

What's actually involved in the smoke test? I passed an mot earlier in the year but what are the limits?

A. All vehicles

1. Raise the engine speed to around 2500 rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower.

Hold this speed steady for 20 seconds to ensure that the inlet and exhaust system is properly purged. Allow the engine to return to idle and the emissions to stabilise.

a. assess the engine idle speed.

b. assess the smoke emitted from the tailpipe at idle,

c. rapidly increase the engine speed to around 2500rpm or half maximum . engine speed if this is lower and assess the smoke emitted from the tailpipe. Allow the engine to return to idle.

The average of the three acceleration readings will be calculated and if the reading is at or below 2.5m-1 for non-turbocharged engines or 3.0m-1 for turbocharged engines, the vehicle will pass this element of the test.

The last time I witnessed a smoke test, the tester asked me if my cambelt was done recently and held it on the limiter for about 2 seconds. :o

I got something like 2.36 on my smoke test but I was running with a poorly setup turbo, and the car had only been rebuilt the same morning so there was some residual smoke to get rid of! I think now it would easily pass a smoke test

PMSL @ 2.96! limit is 3.00 of course. :D

maybe the law is different in N ireland..... All MOTs are dont at govenment facilities and not at liscenced garages.... I can remember them doing the full throttle test years ago, but I think they were fecking up too many peoples engines.....

Problem is often people don't maintain their cars properly or change the cam belt, hence when it goes for an MOT the sh!t hits the fan and the MOT tester gets the blame.
