Facelift Octavia Vrs Wind Noise At Speed

Recommended Posts

My new petrol octavia vrs appears to have a wind noise at speed (60mph upwards). Noise appears to be coming from the from end, door seals window seals etc appear to be ok. Has anybody else had a similar issue? I have heard of several other cars doing the same both petrol and diesel models, as yet cannot seem to find the cause.

I think with most modern cars its the (huge) mirrors. BMW's suffer from this as well.

cheers

its my 3rd Vrs and the others didnt do it, the facelift has bigger mirrors so it could be that

It's either the wing mirrors where the black bit joins the main mirror or the seals round the window. Even the slightest gap causes noises on these things and the rear quarterlights are notorious for it right at the back. Dealers are forever sealing them up with black silicon sealant. A search will reveal much. :)

The front grille was blanked off and the noise went away, because ive had all the previous versions of the octavia vrs I know what it sounds like, just annoying more than anything really.

Did you have the front grille blanked off by the dealer?

Picked up my new VRS 2 days ago and last night had the same problem between 60 and 70mph. Traced noise to drivers window. Noticed that if you flick the window switch down the window moves about 2mm from its fully closed position and the noise disappears. Window still well inside the seal so no issue with water ingress. Will see how it goes. May return car to dealer for proper fix.

The dealer blanked off the grille

Skoda are saying its a characteristic of the car!!

Interesting its the drivers window, it had to be a seal / window door etc

Cheers

Hi,

Looking for some help with this one. Had my car in the garage today to investigate the wind related noise - appears that its not the window seal and it may be from the front end.

Could you please give me more details on what the dealer did to fix your car. Was it the bottom honeycomb grille they blanked off and was it just a section of it? What did they use to blnak it off?

I'm in Aberdeen and the dealer is keen to find a solution and any pointers would help. What dealership did you have the work done at?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

Being honest with you I am stumped.

Skoda have now washed there hands of my issue saying its a characteristic of the car, which is rubbish. Short of throwing the toys out the pram and selling my car I will give it one last go with my retailer who I have a good relationship with so fingers crossed.

My retailer originally passed the issue back to Skoda Technical several months ago, who didnt come up with a fix, and with the retailer spending workshop time on my car wont get a penny back from Skoda, hence the stalemate.

The dealer blanked off the main grille not the honeycomb part and this stopped the noise under testing, which would indicate wind passing through the grille creating a disturbance on something under the bonnet? . I thought it was odd that they tried that first and not the usual door seals window seal route.

The best part of this is the Demonstrator the retailer has is doing it as well, so would suggest its a wider problem!!

Cheers

What sort of noise is it? Mine is "howling" at speed and driving me insane.

There is no way that noise is a characteristic and it wasn't there the frist 11000 miles I owned the car either...

Sounds like the noise I'm getting, mine starts at about 55-60 though and if that's a characteristic of the car then I'd have not bought an Octavia.

No one in their right mind would buy a car with that "characteristic" and I'm not quite that mad just yet (though maybe not far off due to the amount of time spent listening to a howling noise coming from my car emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif )

Mine is a howling noise also. Can be anywhere between 55mph and 75mph depending on the weather. When its windy outside the noise is nearer 55mph and when calm its nearer 75mph. Had it on test drive with the dealer today and he was certain it was a front end noise. Suggested I give them the car for a couple of days so they can investigate the issue further.

Hi,

Exactly a car thats built for speed as well its a bit disappointing being honest.

I am more angry at how quickly Skoda dismissed me especially as my retailer told them the noise is an issue!!

Cheers

Definitely the same, had it at 40 on a couple of occasions when it's been windy outside. It's really annoying when you spend 75-80% of your time on the motorway. Was loving the car til this noise started.

Hope they find the issue and then I'll go to a dealer and tell them how to fix mine

Hi,

Whats even more annoying was that my retailer has had my car 4 times used my petrol and racked up the milege, and i havent even asked for anything back.

I hope your retailer has better luck finding the issue

Cheers

Hi,

Will let you know how I get on with the dealer and if any solution is found. This cannot be classed as a "characteristic" of the car - if that's their conclusion they may find themselves getting a special mention from Anne Robinson on BBC's Watchdog.

Cheers.

Mine is making the same noise. It happened a lot when I first got the car. Took it back to the dealer last week and they adjusted the passenger window. This seems to have made it a lot better but still get the occasional noise so must have something to do with cross winds etc. When the noise is present I can feel a vibration on the head lining on the passenger side so definately coming from that area. Try feeling the headling when you get the noise to see which side it is coming from or if it is the same issue I am having.

Have they just scrimped on the sound proofing in the doors making it sound worse? I've noticed the sound of passing cars more in my new vrs than I did the old one. Anyone tried pulling the mirror in to see if it changes the noise? I might give it a go tomorrow to see if it makes a difference.

If it is the same noise as I have it is not normal wind noise and my dealer agrees with me on this (they have heard it too). It is definately not due to wing mirrors or sound insulation but is something that is not fitted correctly and is resonating.

Hi,

Tried a couple of things tonight.

Firstly, blanked off the front grille and this made no difference.

Secondly, pulled the drivers mirror in and the noise stopped.

Thirdly, with the mirror back to its normal position I applied masking tape to all the joints and seals on the mirror and this made no difference - noise still present.

As mentioned previously, nudging the drivers window down a few mm still stops the noise.

Appears that the route cause is the mirror - and as previously mentioned the vibration appears to be transferring into the door and causing something in the A-pillar lining or door to resonate.

Does anybody else have the curtain airbags fitted as an option?

I will feed this back to the dealer tomorrow and see if they have any suggestions.

Will let you all know how I get on.

Cheers.
