Octavia 2.0 PD TDI 140

Featured Replies

Hi all. Just bought an 06 plate 140 bhp 2.0 pd tdi with 45,000 on the clock. Goes like stink off a shovel. What sort of real world MPG should I expect? Is 50mpg realistic on 50 - 60 mph A road driving? I have also read a few posts regarding the reliability of these motors. Is there anything in particular to look out for? The car has 1 year warranty from Skoda and has had the cam belt and water pump done as part of the deal!

Your first post - welcome to Briskoda! :hi:

I'm getting about 47 MPG daily commute (Maxidot, not tank to tank) ... on a motorway run, 57 MPG!

Where abouts in Yorkshire are you?

Im in York

What sort of driving gets 47mpg? Town, A road etc?

Thanks for the reply!

A road, is 47ish mpg for me too, this goes up to 50+ if I take it easy and the missus can get 60mpg!

These cars are very reliable with regular servicing, Enjoy :D

Sounds good! Just got rid of a 4x4 doing 28 ish (if lucky) MPG so anything really is going to be better!!

Hi octavia82,

I'm in York too - Strensall.

Did you get it from Martin Beaver? They are a great dealer.

I have a 140bhp 2.0PD too - although in a 4x4 Scout.

I can only dream of 47 mpg, although I'm glad I'm not as low as 28mpg!

I don't trust the onboard computer as with every car I've had they lie!

My average mpg when the wife commutes around the outer rind road is 32mpg, when I'm lucky and I get the keys to commute to Durham I've managed 39mpg before...

No I got it from the Skoda dealer in Hull. Excellent service so far!

Im hoping for 50mpg and most of the driving is back and forth along the 1079 so hopefully it will do that!

To be honest, I'm hoping for mid 40's as I love the power delivery and make the most of it. Will find out tonight when I fill my car up for the 2nd time, not bad considering I only picked it up last wednesday :o

Things to look out for, apart from general servicing I think the only common faults are noisy rear windows/light clusters and the turbo's can sometimes fail quite early on in their life.

I've been told by a close friend that they have it on good authority from a highly skilled/qualified VW mastertech that the PD140 turbos tend to fail sooner if the engines are on long life servicing rather than fixed.

Im getting mid 40`s mpg now its warmed up a bit but this last cold winter kept it down to about 36 mpg

50 mpg is possible with ease, I get 52 mpg on a local stretch of dual carriagway doing 40/45 mph IF the readouts are to be believed.. B)

My Scout returns 50 ish on the trip into work, tho it was indicating 57 this morning but I was stuck at 50 mph for quite sometime.

I get an average of 48-52mpg (calculated) over a series of tankfuls - mainly motorway and NSL single carriageways. My commute will often show in excess of 60mpg on the computer - which I reckon to be about 5-6mpg more optomistic than the tank-to-tank method.

I'm getting around the 50mpg mark, I'm also mapped to about 185-190bhp :D makes the car alot smoother to drive ;) (thats what i told SWMBO anyway hehe)

common faults are noisy rear windows/light clusters

Light clusters? hmmm never knew about that one.............do we have a cure?

I'm sure you'll be happy with your new motor.

I arrange meets in the Doncaster area, pop along if you can.

There's a tutorial on here by Mike Holroyd on how to recalibrate the fuel computer using Vagcom VCDS.

(That's requires a friend with a Laptop, some special VW software and a very special cable)

Mine was 15% optimistic, compared to tank to tank measures.

You'll find that as it's a 16v engine it doesn't like to labour at low revs, so bizarrely it uses less fuel in lower gears.

I'd say keep it at 2000 revs, as it gives greater flexibilty to either rev and go, or use engine braking.

The two (potentially expensive) weaknesses are the Turbo and the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF).

However, if you regularly check / change the oil and allow the turbo to warm up and warm down properly,

you'll have less to worry about.

Long life servicing is only recommended for motorway cars, if you're just pootling about in town,

your friend will suggest fixed intervals

DMFs don't like traffic light grand prix, drive it like there's an egg on the clutch pedal, you'll be fine.

As for mpg, tyre widths make a difference.

My winter 195/65/15s average 52 overall and 56-60 on a steady run

My summer 225/45/17s average 46-48, 52-56 on a steady run.

Just done 3000miles in 15 days, lots of fast autobahns, averaged 43.2mpg.

So if you're lucky enough to have 16" wheels 205width,

17 & 18s look cool, but your wallet might not like them.

I used to have a 1.9 TDI 90bhp which if you drove like a granny, could hyper mile 75mpg.

Partly down to tyres 195/65/15 but partly emissions regulations EU II as opposed to EU IV.

(Scratches head as to the inverse relationship between emissions and fuel usage).

Anyway, there's plenty of helpful people on here.

Have a good read through, as whatever it is, someone else has usually already fixed it.

Filled up again today,

I drive on a mixture of roads, probably

50% motorway

25% B roads

25% town driving

Trip said 47mpg

Calculated mpg = 48.1

considering I've only had the car 1 week and i'm getting 48mpg I'm really pleased with it and once I work out how to get the most out of it I expect it to improve slightly

Edited by matt@theforce

Are you gonna come & show it off Matt? Linky in sig...

I would but I'm not around that weekend, off to Clevedon to visit some family, mind you, I might not have the car, depends on how long the garage need it to look at the turbo screeching :'(
