Checking oil - should the engine be warm?

Featured Replies

Hi

Reading the manual you are advised to park on a level road, switch off the engine, let the car cool for a few minutes and then check the oil. Does this mean that the car should be warmed before checking the oil or can you just go out and check with a cold engine??

Might sound a stupid question but the Civic I had explicitly said to warm the engine first. The Yeti brochure is a bit ambiguous.

Thanks

How to check oil level:

Preconditions: Vehicle should be on level ground.

Correct Methods:

1)Cold Engine. Leave the car to rest overnight (or a few hours) and check the oil level.

2)Warm Engine. Check the oil lever when the engine is warm (has reached working temperatures, about 90C). Let it rest for a few minutes for the oil to return in the carter and then do the measurement.

Wrong Method

1)Cold Engine. If the engine is ran for a few minutes, the oil temperature remains close to ambient temperature, and the oil takes too much time to return to the carter. A measurement within a few minutes of killing the engine will show significant lack in oil.

Excellent. Thanks very much - pretty much confirmed what I was practicing!
