MFD2 Multimedia Adapters

Featured Replies

Just installed an MFD2 unit in my vRS and now I'd like to look at hooking up my iPhone to the unit.

I've heard many things (some good some bad) regarding video in motion adapters from ebay and I wondered if anyone could recommend a supplier. As of now, supplying the UK there are 3 hits:

..all of which seem to emanate from Poland. Any thoughts?

For information, I'm planning to output ALL interface video from my jailbroken iPhone using ScreenSplitr ( http://screensplitr.com ). I reckon it might look OK when in landscape mode - useful for using CoPilot and Navigon on the big screen etc.

Whatdya think?

Thats the one I have, with forced VIM via a pikey hack. Ive got a HD media player with 500GB drive connected to it ATM, but my current project is to convert to a carputer with a bmw i-drive style jog control for the main controller on the armrest.

£211!!? Sweet baby Jesus and the orphans that's pricey!

Love to see that carputer rig though.

ebay should have them a lot cheaper than that, just keep in mind you dont have to get a Video in motion unit as you can do that yourself if need be ;)

As for my carputer, its an early stages work in progress. In my old banger I used to use a huge tower and 600w inverter in the rear passenger footwell. Nothing quite like doing it on the cheap. But Ive got an old(ish) laptop that Ive taken the screen off to save battery power Ill add an external 2.5 500GB drive. Im hopefully going to get this all into the cd changer area in the boot. This will be powered by a 12VDC-19VDC laptop charger. The video out from the laptop will go into the multimedia adapter.

It will hopefully be controlled by a Griffin Powermate (USB Shuttle Dial) mounted on the armrest hopefully and voice control.

I have looked at most frontends and none gave me the flexibility I need so Im programming my own

Is roughly what it will look like, but its in early stages and slow going as I run into obstacles at every turn.

Im hoping to have Video Music and WiFi with text to speech screen announcments to start, hopefully adding bluetooth, GPS, CAN reader, rear view camera, driving camera and wireless media server so the iphone and ipod touches can access the media too, that being if I can find out how to program those in heh.

Nice.

You should look at the cheap, Intel ION based computers like the Acer Revo. Low power requirements, reasonable accelerated multimedia (video) playback and small form factor to boot.

My daughter got a Acer Veriton N260G, which I was interested to see about sticking one in the car, but after playing around with it, it just seemed very slow, even on basic tasks.

It just seemed a lot of money to waste when the laptop I already had could do the job faster, just not quite as aesthetically pleasing. I even considered rotating the screen and roof mounting it for the rear :giggle:

If I could get a decent mounting unit and get it looking OEM then I might still consider it.

So far its only cost me about £18

Big plans, low budget. One step at a time though.
