Rear wiper and washer not working

Featured Replies

Hello everyone... I'll probably get spanked by the "use the search!!!!" Police, but hey... I've tried searching but didn't get far.

Picked up my 04 Fabia VRS a couple of days ago, and tried out the rear wiper, it worked for about 5 seconds and just stopped... and hasn't worked since. Pretty typical huh?

I thought maybe the motor is dead or something but the washer doesn't work either. I can't hear the washer pump, so seems completely dead.

Maybe a fuse has gone? Are the washer and motor on the same circuit?

Any help would be appreciated :) Thanks

Have you tried looking at the sticky :wonder: its 3 threads above this one.....................................

Yes I have. Also I have replaced fuse 15 and to no avail. I forgot to mention that the front wipers/washers work fine. It's just the rear. :)

Hello and Welcome to the forum. :hi:

Are you sure you did the search properly? :wonder:

This sticky thread is right in front of you. Wipers not working?? - Read this first!!

If a pipe has come off, this thread is useful Rear washer jet issues... help!. Read post #11.

HTH

Thanks for your help.. I've read both of those (see above). Have checked fuse 15, but it's fine. And like I said in the OP, I can't hear the washer pump working at all so I guess that it's not a case of the pipe having popped off.

Cheers though guys :) Any more help would be gratefully received...

If the fronts work, it's not the washer motor (same motor). It's clearly not the fuse.

It could be the stalk, or the washer connection in the tailgate if the nozzle is next to the rear wiper motor.

Well an update - have checked and the washer motor seems to work now - and have located the connection at fault in the pipe (near bulkhead).

However the wiper motor itself on the tailgate still doesn't work at all. Any ideas on that?

Another update :) managed to fix the rear wiper now, just needed a good spraying with WD40 as it was rusted solid I think. Have loosened this up now.

Now I just need to find a way to get that pesky rear wiper off the motor, as I ordered a new one from SkoSpares. But it's completely rusted solid :( :( :(

This is a nuisance, if you use a small puller I think that you will trash the spray nozzle, if you first remove the spray nozzle then you will trash the water feed tube - bummer. Maybe buy a repair kit for the washer and wiper - you will get new shafts and seals and nozzle and grease.

On second thoughts, as you are buying a new wiper arm, just weaken the old one by cutting it.

Thanks for your help :)

Popped round my local car shop in the search for a wiper removal tool, but the man there said not to bother because on back windows the sudden give and shock fro mthe release could just bust the back window.

He instead recommended, like you, to hack saw the old arm off :) so thats what I did. Much quicker than assing around with WD40 for years haha.

Thanks for your help :) New wiper is on now. Just got to find that pesky leak by the bulkhead.

Well now I've found the leak by the bulkhead and reconnected the two pieces. Now the water goes all the way through to the wiper motor on the back tailgate, and is connected etc but there seems to be a break in the black " L " shape piece of plastic that connects into the back of the motor...

So now when I use the washer, it sprays most of the washer fluid into the boot lining and only a little bit comes out of the nozzle... typical!

Can anyone advise if this warrants a whole new motor? Or does the black bit come out of it? It's not the actual connection piece, it's like the black L shape that connects from the connector into the motor...

Thanks :)

Does the "L" shaped bit not just push onto the shaft, or if not, this part and a few more come as a repair kit - ask at Skoda - or someone here might confirm which VW Golf kit fits the Fabia and Ibiza - I know that the Polo needs a longer set of shafts - and they are available for that car, by the way, the repair kit consists of:- a new wiper shaft + a new washer tube that fits inside the shaft + a new spray nozzle + seal + two different greases + new gasket + new screws. Oh and the plastic "L" shaped bit is meant to be bonded onto the washer tube.
