Ticking indicator

Featured Replies

I have the clicking relay on my indicator so I swapped that hoping it would cure it but it still does it and getting more frequent, could it be the actual indicator stalk or is there any other common faults to this? 2003 tdi 110

cheers for any help

Most likely the fault is with the indicator relay which is mounted behind the hazard relay switch on the center of the dash. Swap that over and it *should* remove your issues.

I hav swapped the switch relay but it was off eBay but I was told it was bought but not used so was new, is there any way of testing it? Or is it worth buying a new item from dealer?

Have you checked the indicator bulbs are all working? On some cars (not sure if this is the case with VAG cars) the louder, more frequent ticking indicates a blown bulb.

your just up the road from me, if you come down to mine we could swap the relay over from my car or I think I have a spare knocking around somewhere.

I'm down near Long Eaton so not that close.

I wouldn't be surprised if a leon relay would fit, the front is different but the cars share so much mechanical and electrical components, whip it out and have a look, I think it comes out the same way as in the octavia.

Just had a look through service history and it had another relay a couple of year ago, they should last longer than that shouldn't they?! And I have swapped that, could something be causing the relay to blow? Or could it be the indicator stalk itself? The random ticking after indicating getting on my nerves now!! It seems to be worse after indicating left??

It'll be the stalk, try some switch cleaner at the base of it and work it in. If that doesn't work you'll need a new stalk with the associated steering wheel/airbag removal operations to fit it.

Thanks fordman, I take it if I remove the wheel the airbag light will need resetting? I will search for a guide as I bet somebody has asked about that already. Can't imagine it's a har job just got to be in the correct order! What make switch cleaner? Where could I get that from? Seen the indicator stalk brand new on eBay for about £30 as it's got cruise so UFO can do wheel myself it won't be to bad.

Cheers

A new stalk from Skoda shouldn't be much more than £30 and it'll have a two year warranty. You can get switch cleaner from Halfords around £10 a can, I got some from a motor factor today at £5 + VAT a can. You won't need to rest the airbag light if you do not turn the ignition on with it disconnected. One main sticking point is the airbag slip ring, it must not be turned with the steering wheel removed as they are very easily damaged, normal ones cost around £60, if the car has ESP you can more than double that and there is a specific way to set up a new ESP slip ring.

Best to go with the switch cleaner first and see what happens.

ok I will five that a blast and hope it works. If not I think I would give the steering wheel removal a go myself, I wouldn't need to turn the wheel anyway as I would swap possible faulty part then put wheel straight back on. Should I get the steering colum taken off then spray cleaner up near switches?

Thanks for info

You can spray it in at the base of the stalk, or you can remove the shrouds for slightly better access.

Tried the switch cleaner and so far so good!!! I am amazed especially that it only cos £3.50! Glad I didn't just buy a new stalk!

Thanks for the tip!

Hi I have a problem with my indicators as well!! I.e. not working (intermittently) I have already replaced the indicator stalk - which did fix it for about 8 corners.... it has now got to the point it rarely works.

How would I go about gaining access to the relay? and whereabouts would I find a replacement one (not from a 'st'ealer - dealer)? and roughly what would be the cost? and how difficult is it? Trained monkey could do it, or only an experienced electrical mechanic???
