Testing Engine Electronic light

Featured Replies

Coming back from Newry today the light came on, its about 70 miles each way and it was okay on the way up but the light came on during the return journey (to be honest I don't exactly know exactly when).

I dunno if this would affect it but yesterday I put about around 1/4 - 1/2 litre of Castrol GTX Magnatec as it seemed a little low (down near min. On the way back today I pulled into a garage and it was 3/4 way between the min & max. so I don't think its too full. The car seems to be running okay and no power loss, I tried turning it off & on a number of times but the light stayed on.

I know it could be a million and one things but anyone have any ideas ?

I'm thinking about bringing it into the garage tomorrow.

if its on and the car appears to be running well, then it may just be a warning that a sensor has failed or it has detected a potential prob, ur mate with vag-com will be able to read it for ye, handiest to pop into a skod a dealer and ask em to read it though

Check your brake lights! Sounds stupid but on diesels the glow plug warning light can also signify a brake light failure - usually the brake light switch.

I brought the car down to the dealer today, charged 25 Euro to be told my old friends are back see here

17705 - Pressure Drop betw. Turbo and Throttle Valve

17545 - Long Term Fuel Trim Add.Fuel (Bank 1) System too Rich

I was talking to the dealer and happened to have a copy of the previous thread with me and I was able to confirm that both of these came up on the car before which was the last time the light came on. He said he wasn't concerned about the 17705 code, and the 17545 could be due to a Lambda probe sensor.

I asked him why he wasn't concerned about the 17705 and he said that with the turbo its loosing some boost but you'll get that   , I said the reason the fault code was there is that theres a fault and that if the loosing of boost was supposed to happen then all RS's should display the problem and they don't, a fault is there due to a problem. If he doesn't think theres a problem then what is he going to start looking at to try and fix it.

He said to book it in for him to have a look at it, but he's been looking at it for the last 3 years and has done f**k all. Whats really pi**ing me off is that the exact same thing happened with me trying to get the seat covers replaced, they dragged their heels until it was out of warranty and then tell me to f**k off. This type of problem is not the type of thing I can keep an eye on myself as I don't have much access to VAG-COM but the dealer has seen it time and time again when its been in with them but they have just been clearing it and sending it back out the door  , see below for history of the problem.

8th April 02

Car was in for the 10K service, Fault code 17705 was showing up.

15 May 02

Car was in the garage, asked them to check for Fault codes. I told them about the way the car was hesitating , when taking off there would be a sudden drop in power and then it would take off again. It was happening in 1st gear at around 2500 rpm.

10th Sep 02

Car in Garage, again I told them about the hesitation but I was told it was due to the ASR (it was happening even when the ASR was turned off). I asked them to check the fault codes but they never said if anything was found.

21st Oct 02

Car in garage for a number of things, one of them the hesitating. I was told it showed up a fault code but that it was different to the previous one but VAG COM showed it as the exact same code ie 17705. The MAF was replaced by the garage.

12th June 03

Testing Engine Electronics light on. Brought car to the garage and Fault code 17705 was showing up on the system, Dealer said to ring him if the hesitation happened again and he

I can see a consistant issue here....

You keep bringing it back to the same place !!!

Bring it to another dealer !!! (I can give you Service Manager names etc)

This issue is obiously a consistant issue, and you're definately not getting value for money for the service. Either move onto another dealer or talk to the dealer principal and demand the issue to be sorted. Remember the garages really only make money on the servicing end of things.

Let us know how you get on.

Have you had the back boost pipe changed for the latter sort?

There is a bulletin about those two faults together with a nice simple flow chart to aid diagnosis. Usually ends up updating the boost pipe for the latter one with the double lipped seal on it and replacing the MAF for the enrichment fault.

Heres the photo I showed the dealer of the pipe which was on my car, after initially not thinking there was an issue they eventually did a u-turn when I got the information on the technical bulletin no 56 from this site  and changed it on April 1st 04 (I never physically checked the replacment as I assumed it was changed) [img']http://www.briskoda.net/gallery/data/500/33Skoda_Fault_1-med.jpg[/img]

From looking at notes in my diary it looks like the MAF was replaced on the 21st Oct 02.

So it looks like both have been replaced but do you think their could still be problems with them ? Could the car be down on power due to these codes ?

Bernard's right. Bring it back to another dealer.

BTW this diary that you're talking about. Has it got a lickle lock with a lickle key and nobody in the whole wide world is allowed to look in it except you/ :rofl::rofl:

Update,

I brought the car to a new dealer, Phoenix motors in Prussia street (I so wish I had went there sooner). Explained the problem and he said its the dump valve (Jon was blue in the face telling me, sorry :buttkick: . It was suggested to the original dealer but he wasn't concerned after all it was under warranty and I didn't want to do anything to void that, although he wasn't concerned about much :finger: ). The new dealer said he'd contact Skoda Ireland about it to try and get it done under warranty as I explained how long its been ongoing. I got a call back the other day, Skoda Ireland approved the DV as a goodwill gesture  .

I went in today and got it fitted, he also cleaned the throttle body and cleared any errors while I waited. he said he'd have no problem with me going to go back in the New year to ensure the fault stays away.

So big thanks to Phoenix motors for excellent service, wow have I been missing out (that other dealer is full of **** :dopey: ).

Thanks again to everyone for their help with this :grouphug: , I hope its gone for good now, so fingers crossed

hmph! My name not mentioned...

Glad to see its finally sorted. Methinks you'll be getting it serviced in Phoenix from now on...

Fingers crossed Gaff.

IIRC if there is any further faults its got to be the throttle body, but I dont think ive ever actually got that far on the repair procedure of bulletin 56, i think they are allways sorted before that (did another one the other day).

It seems smoother between gear changes now. Just before it was changed it felt changing gears when the car was cold, even when it was up to temp., if you know what I mean (hard to balance accelerator and clutch)
