Not sure what do with VRs, need a car a 17 year old can drive.

Featured Replies

Here's the dilemna, I have had Ltd Edition Fabia VRs #42 from new and I really like the car but my son is 17 soon and I need a car that he can drive legally. I can't get a quote on the VRs with him as a named driver so I might have to bite the bullet and sell the car. I don't want to sell but I might have to in order to fund the purchase of a car that I can use but also he can learn in and eventually drive when he passes his test. I know it's a rubbish situation to be in, but what would Briskodians do? Sell the VRs or think of something else? Keeping two cars is definitely not an option, I'm afraid.

Just pay someone to give him driving lessons.

I'd go mental if my dad sold a car like that just to give me driving lessons in.

Carl

Thats why you have driving instructors

it seems like nobody will insure youngsters now days no mateer what the car is... just dont think they want them on the road full stop

Can he not get insured on it atall?

Im only 18, with 1y ncb, and insuring it wasnt a problem for me, on my own policy. Including mods with it running 200+bhp

being an 18 year old i would have done anything to learn in a VRS at 17! :)

Thanks for the replies. He needs to be able to use the car occaisionally after he's passed his test too. We will have lessons for him, we did this with my daughter, but she shares with the Mrs Bloggs Citroen C1. So I need a car he can share with me. I haven't tried calling brokers but the on line insurance websites return a " we can't quote" page. BTW - A basic Hyundai i10 will cost £1500 to insure with me as the main driver and my son as a named driver.

How much did you pay, Mark? I don't want to pay more than about £1500.

Bearing in mind that he'll probably scrape whatever you get then spend a grand or so on an old, small hatchback with 12 month's test and just insure it tpft. You then won't worry about him over-revving it, burning the clutch etc.

You can then keep your VRs - either in use or SORN'ed if you can't afford to run 2.

When he passes his test you'll be able to flog the hatchback and, assuming it isn't too badly wrecked, get back 50% of what you paid. Or keep it for him to use for a couple of years until it dies and he is less of an insurance liability.

Extra advantage is that when you get back on the road in your VRs it will seem 10x better

How much did you pay, Mark? I don't want to pay more than about £1500.

At the moment im paying 1550, (just renewed for another year, i passed my test October 2008) im 19 in october so i will have 2 years ncb then.

My car is with Admiral Multi Car policy, i appreciate you may not have a multi car policy but its not massivly different to a normal policy.

Basically the Fabia is only insurance group 9, now to give you a rough idea my first car was a golf mk4 gt tdi 115 bhp but insurance group 10. And i was paying £1200 tpf&t (on my own policy)

You should expect the fabia to be less than that, and if you do it as a named driver it should be even less.

I dont trust Insurance broker websites as i believe they are not very accurate . When i wanted to ensure my golf, i was getting silly quotes like 4-6k

Hope this info is helpfull.

NOT a fan of learner/new drivers driving powerful cars. there are rare exceptions but I've yet to seen any in person.

What I would do is simply get a cheapo car (corsa/micra etc) if you really feel he needs extra practice, my parents had bmw's back then when I was learning so I pretty much only got driving instructor to go by. Luckily my instructor was v good, I've seen/heard some which are simply appalling really on what they teach kids nowadays..

If your kid needs a car and situation can't let you get one for him, simply get him to get one himself

[boring life story] My parents got me a car shortly after I passed and went away for uni (1.4mpi fabia!), in the summer months I worked and saved up enough for a play car... That was silly fun, Im in uni, and having 2 cars..! Situations occurred and I was back down to one.. :'( saved up again and this time I've p/x my fabia to get the vRS[/boring life story]

I do agree with this, cheapo car for first 6 months/year. Then get him on the fabia, but even on a little old car insurance will not be cheap.

If you haven't stacked anything then I suppose your an exception!

But hope you see my point, as a young driver they are a bit koo koo at the best of times :giggle:

Edit: On saying that, older generation drivers are also a bit koo koo in their way of thinking :dull: (tail-gaters, impatient drivers etc..)

Just get him a banger ( a wee corsa or micra)

GF got one to learn in and pass her test the main reason was my furby is way too low for her to drive and she can gather up a years NCB and save up for somthing decent! And she has peace of mind knowing it didn't cost her much ! She got a wee micra 600 quid P plate with 34 k on the clock and I some

times drive I lol great wee run about for a 1.3 and cause it's just her banger we don't worry about scrapes or car park dings oh and it's cheap road tax nothing for her to insure - she is 19 driving for 3 months and it flew through the mot yesterday with just needing a tail light bulb lol it never misses a beat!!

I wouldn't sell your LE Furby or let him learn in it keep it good!

Stacked nothing, touch wood. Spend most my time on the road in a work van....1000000's of miles so gets very boring hence having the fabia for lots of fun :) :)

I see your point completely, i dont think i can list any of my mates that are 18/19 that havent had a crash, almost all of them have written first cars off! oh, and yes i do have mates lol!!

Not reading all of the above only the first thread, but how about buying him a £100 fiesta etc that isn't a heap, then insuring him fully comp with a huge excess (£500).

Ins co know you'll never claim for yourself so you get a great price compared to TPFT in my experience.

Plus if he is any good, then he starts to get a no claims even when learning :)

My first car was a Mk4 Ibiza SE TDI which I managed to insure for 1100 with pops as the main driver. That was with Liverpool Victoria, I'm with More Than now and they are a tad cheaper, perhaps give them a call.

All I'd say is avoid price comparisons as they give me extortionate prices for the vRS, as did Adrian Flux.

As marktaylor said, Admiral are also quite cheap and young friendly.

Have you tried Liverpool Victoria? They seem to do silly deals with young 'named' drivers

Why cant he buy the car himself?

I was 19 when I bought my vRS. I had a claim agaisnt me and I got insured FC for £1400. Im now 20 and Just had a renewal through and its gone down to £1250. How ever if I canceled my policy and took a new qoute out with the same company its just over £1000.

Im with Admiral BTW. cheapest ive had by another company is £2000.

Or buy him a cheap run around something like a 1.0 corsa or fiesta. insure him and after a year of (hopefully trouble free) motoring he'll be able to get insured on the vRS

I hope I can offer some help as i've been through/my dad's been through a very similar experience.

I'm now 18 but when I was learning at 17 my dad bought a pre reg'd Fabia 1.9tdi sport 08 plate for him and for me to learn in/share.

The car was fantastic to learn in... being a diesel it was tricky to stall and just generally very very easy to drive. Best part is... it's insurance group 4!!! For a car with nearly as much power as a Vrs and awesome looks.

After I passed I stayed on the insurance and shared with my dad. However, i fancied something of my own so saved up and got a 1.4 fabia which I have recently driven into a tree... just glad it wasn't my dads that I wrecked!

All in all, the 1.9 tdi sport is a wicked little car to learn in and you can pick up a used one for about £9,000.

Any questions just ask!

Hullo! I am 22 years old with 0 no claims bonusin my first year of driving. My first car was a 1.0L Corsa (Which was written off by a middle age man in a audi may i add) Then i has a Chrysler PT Cruiser (2.0L BEAST - Dont know what i was thinking - Tho my insurance was strangly only 850) Then i went on impulse and got a Fabia VRS...I DIDNT CHECK INSURANCE PRICES - Silly me.

I was getting quotes around 2K - I contacted Zurich Connect independantly and they Quoted me 1500 for Fully Comp and i manged to get it for 1200 for paying all in one go (Insain Discount) Iv got my renewal in July and will have my first years NCB so i will see what my renewal quote is from Zurich as i have been looking on comparison websites and put in 1 years NCB and the quotes are still way 1200.

So thats my boring story - So Perhaps try Zurich Connect Bud

Just traded in an old van for my lads first car; an early Fabia 1.2 6v. Not tried insuring it for him yet but for me and the wife full comp it was cheaper than a years pet insurance for the cat emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Simple solution - you swap your VRS for my 1.2HTP

is this meant to be part of his 17th birthday present?

Just attach a Maccies application in his birthday card with a little note "go buy your own car, punk!"

If he is a true man, he will understand what its like for a man to share his vehicle! Besides, thats why you pointed your daughter in the wives direction before, right? ;)
